The Tour de Suisse 2022 Preview
The Tour de Suisse is a multi-stage event that takes place annually, dating back to 1933. This year’s event runs from June 12-19 and covers 832.4 miles, (1,339.6 km) in eight stages. The race begins in Kusnacht, Switzerland on June 12 and ends with a 16-mile (25.6 km) individual time trial in Vaduz, Liechtenstein on June 19. Every stage is classified at least as a hilly stage with stages six and seven composed of rides in the Swiss Alps.
This year’s race is the 22nd event of the year on the UCI World Tour, sandwiched between the French races of the Criterium du Dauphine (June 5-12) and the Tour de France (July 1-24). The race will include all 18 UCI WorldTeams plus three UCI ProTeams. In addition, the Swiss national team is entered in the event for a total of 22 teams.
A Swiss rider hasn’t won this event since Fabian Cancellara did so in 2009 but the home country has 23 total titles, more than any other country. Pasquale Fornara, an Italian rider, holds the individual record with four titles in the 1950s. Eddy Merckx (1974), Lance Armstrong (2001) and Jan Ullrich (2004) won the Suisse/France couple, though Armstrong’s titles were later stripped.
Last Game Records
The defending champion is Richard Carapaz from the Ineos Grenadiers team, but he will not ride this year. Carapaz finished second at the Gio d’Italia last month and is resting up for the Tour de France. Last year he edged out Rigoberto Uran by 17 seconds with Jakob Fugelson finishing 1:15 behind.
Stefan Bissegger won the points classification while Michael Woods won the mountains classification. Team Jumbo-Visma won the overall race, beating Team Bahrain Victorious by 1:07.
The race was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19. Egan Bernal won the 2019 race from Team Ineos while Movistar won the team title.

Tour de Suisse Betting Analysis
Betting odds for the Tour de Suisse are not yet out as riders are not officially confirmed and the Dauphine is still going on in France. We do know that top riders Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic, Wout van Aert, and Mathieu van der Poel will join Carapaz on the sidelines while either riding other events or resting for the Tour de France.
Pogacar has won the last two Tour de France races and will be the favorite there again this year.
Tour de Suisse Team Content
Without Carapaz, the rest of the Ineos team will be on hand and Adam Yates, Geraint Thomas and Dani Martinez are all contenders. Looking back at the cycling stats, Yates finished second in the UAE Tour race to start the 2022 season while Martinez won the Tour of the Basque Country in April and took third in the Paris-Nice race in March.
Thomas won the 2018 Tour de France and was runner up to Egan Bernal in 2019.He was second overall at the Tour de Suisse in 2015 but hasn’t finished the race since 2016.
Jumbo-Visma will be led by Sepp Kuss and Rohan Dennis with the rest of their team riding at the Criterium du Dauphine and skipping Switzerland. Two-time defending Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar rides in his native Slovakia this week instead of Switzerland. Marc Soler will lead Pogacar’s UAE Team Emirates squad.
Alexsandr Vlasov won the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland April 26-May 1 and rides again here for Bora-Hansgrobe. His Bora teammate Sergio Higuita has a win this year as well in the March Volta a Catalunya in Spain.
Swiss ride Gino Mader was runner up at Romandie and either he or Mikel Landa will lead Bahrain-Victorius. Mader won the final stage of this race last year and Landa was third this year at the Giro d’Italia with teammate Pello Bilbao in fifth. Liege-Bastogne-Liege winner Remco Evenepoel leads QuickStep-AlphaVinyl after an impressive ride in Norway this year..
Israel-PremierTech will have Michael Woods and Fugelsang to lead the way. Woods won the mountains classification here last year and Fugelsang was third overall. He likely doesn’t have the mountain legs to win the race, having faded down the stretch last year.
This race will also include a return to the tour for sprinter Peter Sagan, who last rode in March. Sagan has won a record 17 stages at the Tour de Suisse and took the points classification eight times between 2008 and 2018.
Only the better climbing sprinters are in this race with Sagan riding for TotalEnergies, Alexander Kristoff for Intermarrche, Michael Matthews for BikeExchange-Jayco, and Fernando Gaviria for UAE. Swiss rider Stefan Bissegger led the cycling stats last year to win the points classification ahead of Mattia Cattaneo.

Tour de Suisse Betting Prediction
This could be a very nice battle for the podium in Vaduz. Ending with a time trial gives the race plenty of drama down the stretch. Riders like Martinez and Vlasov will try to pull away in the mountains but 22-year-old Evenepoel won multiple stages recently in Norway and is finally showing strength in the mountains. If he is still a factor heading into the time trial, he could take this race from Martinez or Mader.
How to bet on the Tour de Suisse
When the cycling odds do come out for this event, take a look at Martinez, Mader, and Evenepoel and find value in those three to claim this title. Mader is the local favorite and could be the first Swiss champion in more than a decade.
