The Charles Schwab Challenge is upon us, and we have some notable names in the field. A week after a very intriguing PGA Championship picks, Justin Thomas returns and will look to win in back-to-back weeks.
The PGA Tour heads off to Texas for the first time this year as we are ready for the Charles Schwab Classic. This event has been contested at the Colonial for the past 77 years and is the longest-running non-major event on the PGA Tour that is held at the same course.
There are a lot of players in the field this week that decided to double-dip in the PGA Championship and the Charles Schwab Classic. This weekend, in order to win, players will have to be accurate off of the tee and will have to be able to make shots on the course.
PGA Tour Player Records
Last year’s Charles Schwab Challenge winner Jason Kokrak’s even-par 70 was enough, as Jordan Spieth battled to a 3-over 73 and finished two strokes behind Kokrak.
It was Kokrak’s second TOUR victory of his career. After reaching the turn on Sunday, Spieth, the overwhelming favorite of the Texas audience, was still in contention, but two late bogeys – one on the 72nd hole after hitting his approach into the water – ruined his hopes.
Kokrak had five bogeys on Sunday, but he also had five birdies. It was Spieth’s third time finishing second at Colonial.
Charley Hoffman matched for the low round of the day on Sunday with a 5-under 65, putting him in a tie for third with Patton Kizzire, Sebastian Munoz, and Ian Poulter. The quartet came in at ten under par, four strokes behind Kokrak’s winning total.
Charles Schwab Challenge Betting Analysis
There are two players who jump out to us as players who can really contend in this event. Both Collin Morikawa and Jordan Speith have great chances to win this weekend, and I think they provide the best value for a bet.
Speith has always has a lot of success on this course, and it is in his home state of Texas. Morikawa has won this event before and has three Top 10s in his last three starts.
Jordan Spieth (+1300)
Spieth was a popular pick last week, and after a good start, he dropped down the leaderboard, but we have to go with him again in his home state of Texas. He has a long history of success in this tournament, with eight top-15 results in his past nine appearances, including three runner-up finishes and a victory.
His putter has failed him this season, most recently at Southern Hills, but on a course, he knows well, the flat stick might heat up to match his ball-striking. Spieth has all of the shots to contend this weekend.
Collin Morikawa (+1500)
At Colonial, iron play is emphasized, requiring players to hit great second shots into greens. In that regard, Morikawa may be the best in the world. In his first two appearances in the Charles Schwab Challenge, he tied for 14th last year and finished solo second in 2020.
I anticipate Morikawa to rebound this week after a dismal performance at the PGA Championship, where he tied for 55th.
Updates
It is a light weekend for PGA Tour player news for this weekend. You can keep up with all the news online, but thus far, no one has dropped out of the event or suffered an injury.
It has been a quiet week thus far in terms of sweeping news a week after Tiger Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship.
