The final event of the 2023 PGA season will get started at 11:26 am local time on Thursday. East Lake Golf Club, just outside of Atlanta, Georgia, will be the home of the FedEx Cup Championship.
The first two teeing off on Thursday will be Sepp Straka and Jordan Spieth, with the final pairing at 2:00 pm ET – Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland.
Leaderboard Before Starting the Event
With it being the final event of the year, the standings are already put into place pending their season results. Scottie Scheffler starts the event as the leader and is the betting favorite to win this event. Scheffler comes into his first tee shot at -10 and two strokes ahead of second place. Viktor Hovland, who needed a 61 on Sunday to win the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, moved to second. He will start the event at -8.
Third place was Rory McIlroy. Rory is the defending champion of this event. He has not been the great Rory the last two weeks but has kept himself in contention. He gets the chance to start at -7 with his third-place finish. Jon Rahm, who has struggled big time as of late, will start fourth. He was just first a couple of weeks ago. Despite that, his fourth-place finish puts him just four strokes back of the lead as they start on Thursday.
Lucas Glover rounds out the Top 5 after his back-to-back wins earlier this month and gets a chance to start at -5. Rounding out the Top 10, and all guys starting at -4 are Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, and Matthew Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick needed a tie for second place last week at Olympia Fields to move from 40th to inside the Top 10 for the final event.
Guys that finished 11th through 15th get to start the event seven back, at -3. Those guys are Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, and Xander Schauffele. 16th – 20th are another stroke back, at -2. Those guys are Tom Kim, Sung-Jae Im, Tony Finau, Corey Conners, and Si Woo Kim. 21st – 25th start another stroke back and will be -1 when they tee off on Thursday.
These guys are Taylor Moore, Nick Taylor, Adam Schenk, Collin Morikawa, and Jason Day. Finally, the final five guys into the field get no advantage and will be even par. They start ten strokes back of the leader. Sam Burns, Emiliano Grillo, Tyrell Hatton, Jordan Speith, and Sepp Straka are those guys.
Massive Prize Pool
It’s hard to feel too sorry for the guys that do not get an advantage because just finishing the four-day event of golf will reward them with no less than $500,000. The last place in this event will receive $500K. From there, it raises by $10K for each place better than 30th up until 25th place. 24th place receives $565K, and it once again raises by $15K, all the way up to 20th place. 20th place picks up a cool $640K.
19th place then jumps up to $660K, and it raises another $20K all the way up to 16th place. A top-15 finish will net you no less than $760,000.
From there, $800K, $850, $900K, and $950K are payouts for 14th – 11th place. Everyone in the Top 10 will get $1M or more. The total purse is $75M, with the winner coming away with $18M. Second place is $6.5M, while third is $5M. From there, you will see $4M, $3M, $2.5M, $2M, $1.5M, and $1.25M for 4th place through 9th place.
Previous Champions
Rory Mcllroy is the defending champion, while Scheffler led coming into the event a season ago. It was McIlroy’s third in his career. He also won the event in 2016 and 2019. Patrick Cantlay is playing in the event and won it back in 2021. Jordan Spieth is the only other previous champion in the field. He won the event in 2015.
2024 Coming Soon
