The 2023 PGA Tour season begins in under a month, and soon spring will be upon us. The season’s first major championship will take place at Augusta National Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia. Let’s start with the best golfers for 2023.
Making a cut at a major is a difficult task for even the best golfers in the world, but we will take a look at which golfer we have the most confidence in making the weekend at all four major stops and staking their claim as one of the best golfers for 2023.
Whether you want to read for your interest in golf or because you’re looking for golf picks and parlays, this is the article for you.
The Majors
This year if a golfer wants to make the cut at all for majors, he will need to do so at Augusta National, home of the Masters, Oak Hill Country Club, home of this year’s PGA Championship, Los Angeles Country Club, host of the 2023 U.S. Open, and Royal Liverpool, host of The Open.
The best golfers for 2023 will have their work cut out for them on some difficult courses.
The Odds
Looking at the early golf odds, there are just seven golfers that aren’t at plus money to make all four cuts. Those golfers are current world no. 1 Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Smith, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Will Zalatoris.
Those pros possess the shots to earn a tee time on the weekend at each major event, but the value isn’t worth your hard-earned money.
Let us take a look at a golfer further down the list that will give us more bang for our buck but also has the historical statistics to back up our play.
After making just one cut a major in 2021, Max Homa is a name that stands out with odds of +225 to make all four cuts in 2023.
Homa rebounded in 2022, making the cut in the three majors on United States soil and missing the weekend at The Open.
History
Diving into Homa’s history and statistics, it is pretty easy to see why the 32-year-old is a good bet to cash in next year.
His golf game is peaking right now, currently ranked 17th in the world and 7th in the FedEx Cup Standings. Homa was hovering around 90th in the world less than two years ago.
Statistically speaking, Homa was consistent in every facet of his game during 2021-2022, finishing 57th or better amongst PGA Tour players in all six of the major Strokes Gained statistics.
Golf Stats
According to advanced golf stats, his S.G.: Off-the-Tee (25) and S.G.: Tee-to-Green were particularly impressive, allowing him to finish 13th in S.G.: Total.
Having all parts of your game dialed in over an entire year is what he’ll need to make the cut at each major stop.
It took some time, but after winning twice on the then Web.com Tour, Homa picked up his first PGA Tour victory in 2019 at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Since that victory, the California native has gone on to win four more times for a total of five PGA Tour wins. Five career wins on tour is an impressive feat, but picking up that many in four seasons puts you in elite company.
Last year, the former Cal star finished T48 at Augusta, T13 at the PGA Championship, and T47 at the U.S. Open after missing the cut at these three events the previous two seasons.
Homa Performance
Three of the venues will be new to Homa, but there is a good chance the California kid has played a round or two at L.A. Country Club in the past, giving him an advantage over many of the tour pros.
Another positive note for Homa heading into the new year was his play during the fall swing. He picked up a victory in the opening tournament in Napa and finished T23 or better in the five events he played in.
Homa is going to be one of the best golfers for 2023, and although he might have the elite ability to win a major tournament, he has the consistency needed to perform well enough to make cuts at Augusta, Oak Hill, L.A. Country Club, and Royal Liverpool.
Currently, at +225 odds, that’s a number we will jump all over heading into the 2023 Golf schedule, which is loaded with different golf games.
