The PGA Championship returns to Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the fifth time as the world’s best golfers try to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy. PGA tour odds for this event could be huge. The last time the PGA Championship was held here, Tiger Woods captured his fourth and last PGA Championship title back in 2007. PGA Championship Betting Favorites
Jon Rahm (+1100) is the pre-tournament betting favorite leading up to Thursday’s first round. Golf betting odds definitely have a lot of faith in him in this championship run. The last time we saw Rahm he was winning the Mexico Open last month, so the chances are high the 27-year-old Spaniard captures his second major victory.
The no. 1 ranked golfer in the world and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler (+1200) follows Rahm on the odds board. Scheffler has been the hottest golfer on the planet over the past four months, racking up four victories in 15 tournaments. The rumors are out there that the 25-year-old carded a 64 in a scouting trip to Southern Hills prior to the AT&T Byron Nelson.
Justin Thomas (+1200) is right there with Scheffler as J.T. aims for his second PGA Championship victory. Thomas has seven top-10 finishes in 12 events, including three top-10s over his previous five events.
Following those two are the trio of Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, and Collin Morikawa at +1600. McIlroy and Morikawa are major champions, while Cantlay tries to win his first.
PGA Championship Betting Analysis
Southern Hills Golf Club in America’s heartland plays as a par-70 and stretches 7,556 yards. There will be just two par-5s this week, both measuring over 630 yards. The course underwent extensive renovations by Gil Hansen and Jim Wagner in 2018 and re-opened in 2019. The re-working of the course was done to bring back the features of Perry Maxwell’s original 1936 design.
The layout will play more than 300 yards longer than the 2007 PGA Championship and with wider fairways and less tree trouble. Added bunkers and removed rough around the greens will bring accuracy into play.
Weather conditions should be no issue for most of the tournament, giving the players the best chance to score. Like last year’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, don’t expect a majority of the field to break par. Golf picks for this tournament have put this into play.
PGA Championship Betting Predictions
Phil Mickelson was a longshot winner last year, but this year we see the winner coming out of the first page of the odds board. While Mickelson won’t return to defend his title, the 2022 PGA Championship is shaping up to be a battle of elite ballstrikers. Below are our three favorite outright plays, along with a few finishing positions for some players.
Justin Thomas (+1200) – He was one of our plays last week and had another high finish with his seventh top-10 finish in 12 events. J.T.’s ranks fifth in Strokes Gained: Approach The Green, and precise iron shots will be a key factor this week. Thomas wants that second major and he’s in a great position to bring it home at Southern Hills.
Jordan Spieth (+1800) – Another selection last week finished admirably with a solo second. Spieth has a victory and second-place finish in his last two starts leading up to this week. The game is there for the 28-year-old to complete the Career Grand Slam.
Cameron Smith (+2500) – Smith las the iron and putting game to score well at Southern Hills. The Aussie has a pair of victories this year (Sentry Tournament of Champions, the PLAYERS) paired with a T3 at the Masters. He’ll need to be more accurate off the tee, but if he is expect him to be on the front page of the leaderboard.
Tony Finau (+275 to finish T20 or better) – Finau’s had a bit of a quite year with just two top-25 finishes in 14 events. A T2 at the Mexico Open earlier this month shows us the 32-year-old is not far off. Back-to-back top-10 at the last two PGA Championships bodes well for a high finish for the two-time Tour winner.
Rickie Fowler (+220 to finish T40 or better) – Once one of the top golfers in the world, Fowler’s tumble has been puzzling given his ability. We don’t predict Fowler to win his first major this week, but a T21 at the Wells Fargo and a T8 at Kiawah last year provides us with enough ammo to take a shot at Fowler finishing as one of the top 40 golfers this week.
