The 2022 PGA Tour season comes to a close at the Sea Island Resort at St. Simons Island, Georgia. This is the 13th year of the tournament, known for the first five years as the McGladrey Classic before RSM took over naming rights.
The 156-man field begins to play on Thursday, November 17th and ends on Sunday, November 20th.
Players in the field will battle for a piece of the $8.1 million dollar purse along with the FedEx Cup points. The winner receives $1.458 million of that total, along with a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
PGA Tour Victory
Talor Gooch picked up his first and lone PGA Tour victory here last season before jumping to the LIV Golf Series earlier this year. Gooch defeated Canadian Mackenzie Hughes by three shots to claim the win.
There is a list of RSM Classic best bets to target this week, but we will look at some of the best golf matchups to focus on for our golf picks this week, leading up to players teeing off in the first wave Thursday morning.
Brendan Todd vs. Alex Smalley
Todd and Smalley come into the week with the same golf odds, and it should be a fun matchup to follow. Smalley comes into the tournament after a pair of high finishes that have shot him up the golf standings.
The 26-year-old has made five of six cuts, earning his best finish of the season last week with a T4 at the Cadence Bank Houston Open.
Todd, meanwhile, is also off to a solid start to the 2022-23 season. The three-time PGA Tour winner has made four of five cuts with a pair of top-10 finishes.
T9 to Open the Season
Todd finished T9 to open the season at the Fortinet Championship and added a T7 at the CJ CUP in South Carolina a month later.
A pair of golfers coming into the final event in solid form, we like Todd as one of our RSM Classic best bets to take the head-to-head matchup over Smalley.
Golf Pick: Brendan Todd (-110)
Seamus Power vs. Taylor Montgomery
These two golfers are off to excellent starts this season and are both inside the top 10 in the FedEx Cup Standings heading into the week.
Power’s Analysis
Power has made it to the weekend in four of his first five starts, highlighted by his second PGA Tour victory at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
The Irishman followed the victory up with a T3 at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba the following week.
Montgomery’s Analysis
Montgomery has done all you can to start the new season outside of cashing in on that first career PGA Tour victory.
The 27-year-old has made it to the weekend in all six events he’s played in, earning five top-25 finishes. His best finish came in Napa with a solo third at the Fortinet Championship.
Much like Todd and Smalley, these two golfers come to Georgia in peak form.
The pedigree is there for Montgomery to pick up that elusive first win, but you can’t overlook the play of Power over the last year and a half.
We will ride with the 30th-ranked player in the world as another of our RSM Classic best bets.
Golf Pick: Montgomery
Denny McCarthy vs. J.J. Spaun
Our final matchup pits a pair of unlikely players in Denny McCarthy and J.J. Spaun. Both sit near each other in the Official World Golf Rankings and FedEx Cup Standings, and both are near the top of the odds board as favorites for this week.
McCarthy Analysis
McCarthy has taken advantage of the fall slate, playing in six tournaments and making the weekend in five of them.
The 29-year-old is another player this week trying to win for the first time on golf’s biggest stage.
A T6 at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship to go along with a T25 at the Fortinet Championship says his game is trending in the right direction.
Spaun Analysis
Spaun won earlier this year at the Valero Texas Open to cash in on his first career PGA Tour victory. He has stayed in form this fall, cashing in on five of five made cuts.
Spaun has three top-25 finishes, including a pair of T15s at the Shriners Children’s Open and the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.
Spaun has the one win, but McCarthy has been a more consistent player recently. McCarthy is our final RSM Classic best bet over Spaun this week.
Golf Pick: McCarthy (-125)
