The Shriners Children’s Hospital Open marks the third event of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season and the first event to kick off the month of October.
The four-day individual stroke play event begins on Thursday, October 6th, and ends on Sunday, October 9th. This event has been played annually for 39 years in a row since its inception in 1983.
Sungjae Im returns to defend his title after firing a 24-under par and beating his nearest competitor by four shots last season.
The victory was Im’s second PGA Tour victory of his career. Matthew Wolff finished in second place, his highest finish of the 2021-22 season.
Below we take a deep dive into the Shriners Children’s betting preview and give you our golf picks based on the current golf odds.
Shriners Children’s Hospital Open Field
The field is stacked this week, with 12 of the Top-50 players in the world teeing it up on Thursday. Im is joined by 2017 winner and No. 4 player in the world Patrick Cantlay, along with recent Fortinet Champion victor Max Homa.
Joining Im in the field are International teammates:
- Tom Kim
- Cam Davis
- Si Woo Kim
- K.H. Lee
- Mito Pereira
- Taylor Pendrith
- Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Kim has quickly become a fan favorite after his performance at the Presidents Cup and quickly solidifying himself on Tour with a victory at the Wyndham Championship.
Five Major Champions
There are five former major champions in the field, along with a handful of players with Las Vegas ties. Notable sponsorship exemptions were handed out to Charley Hoffman and Thomas Detry, who had success last week in Mississippi.
Rickie Fowler aims to follow up his T6 at the Fortinet Championship with another solid performance in Las Vegas. Jason Day joins Fowler as a former top player looking to regain form early in the season.
The tournament serves as another opportunity for last year’s Korn Ferry Tour graduates to gain important FedEx Cup points before the calendar turns to 2023.
TPC at Summerlin
The first part of our Shriners Children’s betting preview is the course. It was established in 1991 and designed by Bobby Weed with the assistance of player consultant Fuzzy Zoeller.
A par-71 layout, the course stretches 7,255 yards and sits approximately 2,700 yards above sea level.
The greens are made of bentgrass, and the course is known for its aesthetic features, including its numerous water features and desert landscape. Five of the last six winning scores at the Shriners have been 20-under or better.
Three players have won this tournament multiple times, lead by Jim Furyk, who’s been a three-time winner of this event. Kevin Na and Martin Laird have each won this tournament twice.
Shriners Children’s Betting Odds & Picks
The Shriners Children’s betting preview turns the attention to the golf odds and who’s our favorite golf picks.
Cantlay leads the way as the betting favorite at +600, and he’s got value here, given his tournament history.
The former tournament winner hasn’t finished worse than eighth in his last four trips to TPC at Summerlin. He is our pick to win the tournament.
If you aren’t one to take the chalk, defending champion Im can be grabbed at +900. Homa trails the top two at +1400 as he tees it up for the first time since the Presidents Cup.
Top 5
Rounding out the Top 5 are Aaron Wise (+1800) and Tom Kim (+2200), a pair of youngsters with big expectations this season.
Other betting odds of interest are Rickie Fowler’s chances at +6000. Fowler has a new looper on the bag this year and is back taking advance from coach Butch Harmon. Day is further down the list at +9000 as he tries to shake off a missed cut three weeks ago in Napa.
Who to Bet On?
This week features a strong field for a fall event, and the contingent of Presidents Cup participants will surely provide some fireworks.
One thing is certain, whoever wants to win this tournament must make birdies in bunches and be prepared to post four rounds well below par.
While the NFL dominates many homes in America on Sundays, you might not want to miss the Sunday finish in the desert this weekend.
