At TPC Scottsdale, the WM Phoenix Open is set to take place starting Thursday and wrapping up on Sunday before the start of Super Bowl Sunday. This event is a par 71 event, with over $8.8M in prize money on the line.
WM Phoenix Open Picks
- Pick: Justin Thomas (+1100) & Jordan Spieth (+2000)
Phil Calcavecchia and Phil Mickelson hold the course record as they both went 28 under par during the event. Last season, Scottie Scheffler took down the event. It was the second straight season Scheffler won the event. In 2022, he won it over Patrick Cantlay, and last season was Nick Taylor.
Top Candidates
Scottie Scheffler +500
Scheffler is the back-to-back champion of this event. He obviously knows the course well, and there is a great reason he is the favorite. He’s coming off a sixth place finish at Pebble Beach, and in each of his three events since the New Year, he has come up in the Top 17. Scheffler will be fun to watch in Phoenix, and the crowd is certainly going to get behind him. Scheffler is the world’s top-ranked player coming into the event.
Xander Schauffele +1100
After faring well at the Farmers Insurance Open, tying for fourth place, Xander was not as good at Pebble Beach. In fact, the first two days for Schauffele were a disaster, with a 74 and 73. His 67 got him back into the mix a bit heading into Sunday, but overall it was not a great weekend. Earlier in January, he finished third at the American Express. After the Pebble Beach event, the 30-year-old is ranked fifth in the world rankings.
Justin Thomas +1100
Thomas has played solid golf lately. He finished the 2023 portion of his season with a 5th, fourth, and third. He then started 2024, with a third at the American Express, and a sixth-place finish at Pebble Beach. Justin was consistent with a 68, 67, and 78. Thomas has recently cracked the Top 20 in world rankings, and checks in at 19th.
Max Homa +1600
After a 14th place at the Sentry and 13th at the Farmers Insurance, his back-to-back rounds of 73 and 72 did not do him very well at Pebble Beach. Home is a guy that can find it on any given weekend, so his being the fourth biggest favorite is about right. He is a talented golfer, and the fans will enjoy seeing his talents on display. Homa checks into the event ranked 8th in the world rankings.
Jordan Spieth +2000
Often forgotten about these days in the landscape of young talented golfers, Jordan Spieth is still out there. He finished third at the beginning of the year at the Sentry. His latest event was hampered by his struggles on Day 1. He bounced back with a 69 and 68 to climb into the Top 40. Spieth is another guy who will get the fan support as he goes along the course. Now in his 12th season on tour, Spieth has moved up the rankings, and checks in 14th.
Sam Burns +2000
Burns continues to play solid golf with a sixth place at the American Express, and a 10th at Pebble. Burns has been on the PGA Tour since 2017. He checks into this event at 20th in the rankings. The former LSU golfer is just 27 years old.
Sungjae Im +2800
The 25-year-old from Korea has not played really well to start 2024. After doing solid work at the Sentry, his 5th-place finish has been backed up by 25th, 80th, and 66th. Im will need to get it going quickly if he wants to cash his bettors in on the +2800 odds.
