The Kentucky Derby oaks highlighted that it would be a compelling renewal of the famous race, with Epicenter dominating the odds. Check here the jockeys kentucky odds below.
However, the Kentucky Derby 2022 will be remembered for producing one of the biggest ever shocks in the great race. You can find a full Kentucky Derby recap below, as well as examining how jockeys Kentucky odds have fared since the race.
Sonny Leon
The second biggest outsider in the history of the Kentucky Derby was crowned back in May. The jockeys Kentucky odds for the race were set at 81/1 for Rich Strike at Churchill Downs, and the fact that Rich Strike wasn’t even in the race until 24 hours prior shows just how unlikely his success was.
However, it wouldn’t have been possible without an outstanding ride by Sonny Leon, who produced a performance of a lifetime to get the three-year-old into a position to win the race.
He traveled strongly down the rail towards the end of the race, and his pace ensured that no other rival could stop the 81/1 shot from making history.
Derby Remains Leon’s Biggest Win
This has been a career-leading year for Leon to date, as he has won over $4.4 million in career earnings. He has claimed victories in 109 races from 676 starts, also finishing second on 118 occasions and third in a further 100 occasions.
However, Rich Strike remains his only Grade 1 winner, as his only other big race winners have come outside stakes company with the likes of Country Club Bobby and Flatter Her Again, but neither have won returns of more than $100,000 this year.
Joel Rosario
Joel Rosario had the ride on the favorite in the Kentucky Derby 2022. Epicenter was widely expected to win the famous race, and lift the hoodoo that Steven Asmussen has endured in the race.
The jockeys Kentucky odds was set at 41/10, but despite producing a very game effort, he eventually faded in the closing stages and had no response as Rich Strike took the lead down the final stretch. Still, Epicenter came out of the race with a lot of credit, and many still believed that he was the top three-year-old in the country.
Rosario Lands Grade 1 Success
It has been another sensational year for Rosario, as he has won over $19 million in prize money throughout this season. That prize money has been made up by 131 winners, 119 seconds, and 79 thirds.
Epicenter has won more in prize money for Rosario than any of his other rides, as a victory in the G1 Travers means that he has now collected just over $2.8 million this season.
Other notable wins that he has recorded since the Kentucky Derby have come on board Jackie’s Warrior and Pauline’s Pearl, who won the G1 Churchill Downs Stakes and G1 La Troienne Stakes, respectively.
Flavien Prat
The showdown between Zandon and Epicenter was one of the big talking points heading into the Kentucky Derby this year. However, Flavien Prat needed to settle for third with Zandon, as he was passed by Rich Strike in the final furlongs.
Zandon still finished two lengths clear of Simplification, and Prat delivered a strong challenge on board the three-year-old, as the move to switch to the outside ensured that he was in a prominent position to challenge Epicenter.
Continued Success In 2022
Prat has still enjoyed a 2022 campaign to remember despite falling short in the Kentucky Derby. The jockey has won over $18.3 million in prize money this term, which is made up of 166 winners, 135 seconds, and 95 thirds.
Country Grammer has been his highest earning ride this season, as the four-year-old has won over $3.5 million in prize money.
His other rides to have won over $1 million in prize money this term are Hot Rod Charlie and Zandon. He has also achieved further Grade 1 success with Matareya, Adham, and As Time Goes By.
Jose Ortiz
Jose Ortiz produced an excellent ride on Simplification in the Kentucky Derby this year, as the three-year-old battled well to finish the Triple Crown race in fourth. The 35/1 shot was towards the back in the early stages of the race.
But, he traveled well over the Derby distance, and after switching to the outside, he moved into a prominent position. However, the win never looked possible, and the finish in fourth would have delighted connections.
Stakes Winners For Ortiz
It has been another strong campaign for Ortiz in 2022, as the jockey has won over $16.2 million in prize money for connections.
He has landed winners on 153 occasions from 826 rides and has finished in second on a further 144 occasions. Ortiz has also finished third on 114 occasions.
He would land Triple Crown glory later in the season as he rode Early Voting to success in the G1 Preakness Stakes.
That win ensured that the three-year-old has collected more in prize money than any other ride this term. However, he has landed further Grade 1 success this season with Regal Glory, Jack Christopher, and Letruska.
Irad Ortiz
Irad Ortiz had the ride of Mo Donegal in the Kentucky Derby this season, and the three-year-old showed his quality to finish fifth in the race.
Like Simplification, he was towards the back of the field throughout the race before switching to the outside and making a charge towards the line in the final stages.
He was one of the strongest finishers in the race and finished just a neck behind the horse that finished the Kentucky Derby in fourth.
Ortiz Leads Jockey Standings
Ortiz has established himself as one of the very best jockeys in the U.S. this year and has taken his career earnings past $250 million.
In total, this year, he has won just under $23 million in prize money, landing a stunning 218 winners, and he has finished second on 161 occasions and third on 145 occasions.
He has been a serial winner in Grade 1 company throughout this year, which includes victories in the G1 Pegasus World Cup with Life is Good, and a win in the G1 Ashland Stakes with Nest.
Other Grade 1 victories that he has recorded this year have come on board:
- McKulick
- Bleecker Street
- Goodnight Olive
