The first weekend of the 2024 MLB season has come and gone, and there were some big storylines throughout the league. Even though there is still plenty of season remaining, now is a good time to begin to rank some teams.
The American League appears to be a bit more wide-open heading into the 2024 season as the National League has two dominant teams. There are still some great teams in the American League, but there is also more competition.
Here are a look at some early season American League power rankings based on the action that took place in the opening weekend the opening weekend scores and odds.
Odds to Win the American League
- Houston Astros +450
- New York Yankees +450
- Baltimore Orioles +550
- Texas Rangers +650
- Toronto Blue Jays +900
- Seattle Mariners +900
Three Early Leaders
When it comes to putting together some American League power rankings, three teams appear to stand out right away.
2. Texas Rangers
3. Baltimore Orioles
The MLB schedule is now more balanced than it has ever been. But, that still doesn’t mean that things are equal. When putting together MLB American League power rankings after just one weekend, it’s important to remember who each team was playing.
There is no doubt that the New York Yankees were the most impressive AL team in the opening weekend as they went into Houston and won four straight games. New York was supposed to be one of the top MLB teams this season, and that was the case at the beginning of the year.
Texas and Baltimore both went 2-1 in the first weekend, but they are teams that you will want to include in your MLB picks and parlays. The Rangers took care of business against the Chicago Cubs, while the Orioles did the same against the Los Angeles Angels.
Inconsistent Results
Not every team is going to get off to a fast start, and that was the case for some teams in the league. Some teams are going to be included in the MLB best bets today on many days that just didn’t play well to begin the year.
5. Toronto Blue Jays
6. Detroit Tigers
7. Cleveland Guardians
8. Seattle Mariners
9. Minnesota Twins
10. Boston Red Sox
11. Houston Astros
The Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Bluejays are both expected to contend to win the pennant this season, and they met up to begin the year. With both teams taking two wins in the four-game series, that’s about as good as can be expected.
The Detroit Tigers were able to sweep the White Sox in the first season, but that doesn’t mean that they are one of the top MLB teams. Other teams in this group are a bit hard to figure out. But, things will begin to become more clear as the season rolls around.
Seeing the Houston Astros at number 11 in the MLB power rankings is a bit strange, but they were just swept at home by the New York Yankees. This team is eventually going to figure things out, but it was a rough way to begin the year.
Time to Tank
The bottom four teams are also pretty easy to identify when putting together American League power rankings. These teams could always move up, but that doesn’t seem likely.
13. Los Angeles Angels (+8000)
14. Oakland Athletics (+25000)
15. Chicago White Sox (+12500)
These four teams are going nowhere in 2024, and it would be wise to start making plans for next year already. The Chicago White Sox are the worst team in the AL this season, and that’s saying something since the Oakland Athletics are also in the league.
It’s tough to really gauge how good or bad the Royals and Angels are, but it was a rough start to the season. Kansas City could eventually make a move, but it’s going to take some work and good luck.
