D’Backs vs Cubs Betting Preview
Starting Pitchers
Zac Gallen (6-5, 3.87 ERA)
NOT CONFIRMED AS OF July 18, 2:00 pm ET
- Zac Gallen has only earned 19.5% of strikeouts over the last 30 days.
- The right-hander has added 51.7% of ground balls over the last month.
- Gallen has kept walks down to 7.3% this year.
Justin Steele (2-3, 2.71 ERA)
NOT CONFIRMED AS OF July 18, 2:00 pm ET
- Justin Steele has held his last 135 batters to a .092 ISO and wOBA of .205.
- Steele is a left-handed pitcher who has allowed just 3.7% of walks in the last 30 days.
- The Cubs’ ace has given up only 18.6% of fly balls and has recorded 24.4% of strikeouts over the last month.
Justin Steele last pitched on July 11. After Shota Imanaga pitched an inning in the All-Star Game, Steele will likely get the start for Chicago in Game 1 of this series. Again, it’s not confirmed at this time.
On the other hand, Zac Gallen last pitched on July 14. If he takes the mound on Friday, that’ll be his five-day rest. Gallen has not been confirmed as the starter at this time.

Team Analysis
Arizona Diamondbacks

The D’backs are 49-48 heading into the second half of the season. However, with the tight National League Wild Card, the Arizona Diamondbacks could look to be sellers at the trade deadline.
They’d go from a World Series appearance to sellers in one year.
Chicago Cubs

After a solid start to the season, the Chicago Cubs have fallen to 47-51 on the year. Chicago will take on MLB teams with a win percentage of at least .485 in five consecutive series before playing the White Sox in August.
The Cubs will likely be sellers at the deadline, too. That’s important when reviewing our D’Backs vs Cubs MLB game analysis for the series opener.

No Power Against Lefties
The Arizona Diamondbacks have earned a .357 wOBA against lefties over the last 30 days with their projected lineup. However, the team doesn’t have much power.
The projected lineup has also hit a .118 ISO, with only Lourdes Gurriel and Christian Walker hitting an above-average ISO number.
Additionally, the Diamondbacks’ projected lineup only has two batters who walk more than 6.9% of the time against lefties. That’s not ideal for a potential matchup against Justin Steele.
Steele has allowed a .125 ISO throughout the entire season. The lefty has also held his 345 batters faced to a .253 wOBA. Arizona will struggle to find much success against him in this game.
The Strikeout Kings
Chicago has become the strikeout king against righties. The projected lineup has struck out 23.9% of the time against righties over the last 30 days. The projected lineup has seven batters with strikeout rates of at least 26.2% against righties.
While Zac Gallen hasn’t earned a high rate of strikeouts lately, he’s got much more potential to earn them against the Cubs.
Gallen has earned 19.5% of strikeouts over the last 30 days, but he’s still added 24.1% this season. He’s just lacked with the strikeouts since coming back from injury. However, the All-Star Break should help him reset and find his strikeout pitch again.
Therefore, per our D’Backs vs Cubs MLB game analysis, we’d back the Under 7.5 (-115) as long as Steele and Gallen are the two pitchers.
Both pitchers have established veterans with lots of success. Steele has pitched better recently, but Gallen will only get stronger in the year’s second half.
It’ll be one of our best MLB bets today.
