While it’s probably unlikely Skubal will be traded, the Dodgers would be one of the teams to contact if the Tigers want to sell. This game could end up being an audition for Skubal after all.

Skubal has been so dominant that the Tigers are favorites against the Dodgers in the first game, sitting at -132 on the moneyline. On the other hand, the total is currently at 8, but the Over is juiced to -122.

Detroit Can’t Hit Lefties

The Detroit Tigers have struggled to hit lefties over the last 30 days. Justyn-Henry Malloy, Andy Ibanez, and Riley Greene have been the only consistent hitters. However, Greene is a left-handed hitter who doesn’t match up well against Paxton. With only two real threats against Paxton, he’ll likely survive and throw a quality game against the Tigers.

Paxton has only faced 53 lefties throughout the season, but those 53 lefties have hit a .000 ISO. Therefore, Greene will likely struggle. Meanwhile, Paxton hasn’t been great all year, but he finds a way to keep his team in the game. Paxton’s battles have resulted in a 7-2 record to begin the season.

Dodgers, the Pick to Upset

On the other hand, Tarik Skubal has been one of the starters in the MLB this season. He’s added 29% of strikeouts over the last month and has limited walks to 4% in that same time frame. In addition, he’s added nearly 47% of ground balls over the previous 30 days and has held teams to 19% of fly balls.

In the last 30 days, Skubal has only thrown 89 pitches per start. You’d like to see that increase.

That said, the Dodgers match up very well against lefties. The projected lineup has hit an ISO of above .200 and a wOBA near .400 against lefties over the last 30 days. The lineup has also struck out just 10.8% of the time. It’s hard to imagine Skubal racking up many strikeouts in this game.
