The Philadelphia Phillies and the Miami Marlins will cross paths for the second time since the All-Star break when they gather at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday night.
MLB Previous Scoreboard
Philly (61-48) was on the right side of a 4-1 decision in the series opener on Tuesday.
Three batters:
- left fielder Kyle Schwarber
- catcher J.T. Realmuto
- second baseman Jean Segura
Record multi-hit efforts, while Realmuto also drove in a pair of runs. The Marlins (49-60) scored their only run on a JJ Bleday homer in the fourth inning. That knotted the game up before the Phillies took over.
Phillies vs. Marlins Betting Analysis
Phillies Analysis
The Phillies currently own one of the three Wild Card spots in the National League. Their chances are still there in the NL East, as they’re chasing Atlanta and New York in that division. At this moment, they’re ten games behind the New York Mets, who sit in the grouping’s perch.
Philly is on a roll recently, as it has won six consecutive outings, including a four-game home sweep over hapless Washington over the weekend.
Noah Syndergaard Performance
They’re scheduled to put Noah Syndergaard on the mound. To this point, Thor has started 16 games, posting a 6-8 record with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.
He made his debut for Philly Thursday against the Washington Nationals, going five innings and allowing 11 hits and four earned runs.
Somehow, still, he came out with the winning decision, but the Phillies will want to see more from the guy they traded for recently.
Overall, their staff ranks in the top 10 in MLB with a 3.80 ERA and also in total home runs and hits allowed. Opponents have a .238 batting average against Philly.
Phillies Offense
On offense, third baseman Alec Bohm and Schwarber have been key pieces. The former has a team-leading .294 batting average and 111 total hits, while the former has 34 home runs — the second-most in the bigs — and 67 runs driven in. First baseman Rhys Hoskins has a .344 on-base percentage.
The lineup grades out as 10th in the major leagues by hitting .250. Its homer and RBI totals rank in the top five.
Marlins Analysis
The Miami Marlins are still toiling away, trying to insert themselves into the Wild Card conversation. They’re 11 games behind San Diego for the last spot in that regard.
It won’t help Miami’s case that it’s gone 2-8 over its last ten contests. They’ve lost each of their last three slates, as well, to the Mets, Cincinnati, and the Chicago Cubs. The Fish haven’t done too great on the road, either, as they have a 26-32 mark in away games.
Sandy Alcantara Performance
Luckily for them, Sandy Alcantara, a 26-year-old righty, is scheduled to make the start on the hill. He’s been one of the premier hurlers in MLB this season, posting a 10-4 record.
His 1.88 ERA is the second best in the pros, while his 141 strikeouts and 0.93 WHIP also rank within the game’s top 10.
The Marlins have won two of his last three outings, including a 3-0 victory over the Reds on Wednesday. He went the distance in that one, allowing six hits and blanking the visitors. He delivered 105 pitches.
As a whole, Miami’s pitchers sit right behind Philly with a 3.81 ERA. They’re a middle-of-the-road group when it comes to issuing walks and have done a solid job in preventing home runs.
Marlins Have Been Guided by Cooper
At the plate, Miami has been guided by first baseman Garrett Cooper and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. The former has a .275 batting average and a .348 on-base percentage, while the latter has 14 long balls and 45 runs driven in.
Behind Cooper, no regular is swinging for an average better than .250. Other than Chisholm Jr., three other hitters have piled up double-digit homers — first baseman Jesus Aguilar, left fielder Jorge Soler, and center fielder Jesus Sanchez.
Marlins Batting Average Batting
The Marlins grade out in the bottom third of the majors in terms of team batting average (.236), RBIs, dingers, and runs.
For a team that’s trying to scratch its way into the postseason, Miami will need to see some vast improvement over the final stretch. Hopefully for them, that change starts in this contest.
MLB Injury Report
Second baseman Jon Berti (groin) and third baseman Brian Anderson (shoulder) began rehab assignments over the weekend for Miami.
Relief pitchers Cody Poteet and Jordan Holloway both underwent surgeries on their injured elbows on Tuesday. They’re both on the 60-day injured list.
The biggest name out for the Phillies right now is MVP Bryce Harper, who’s waiting for his thumb to heal. He won’t be back for this one but could add a spark to his club’s offense once he does return.
Harper was hitting .318 before he was injured. He also had 15 home runs and 48 runs driven in.
Phillies vs. Marlins Betting Preview
Taking a peek at the MLB odds, the hosts are favored to take home another win here. Philly is -1.5 on the run line at +164, while the Marlins are -200 to cover the spread.
On the moneyline, the Phillies are -132 and Miami a +112 underdog. The total has been set at seven runs, with the over being -122 and the under +100 at the time of this writing.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Miami Marlins Betting Prediction
Let’s make some Marlins vs. Phillies betting predictions. This pitching matchup makes for one of the more interesting MLB matchups.
Syndergaard is back pitching in the NL East, a division he grew familiar with during his time as a Met. He left New York in the offseason but was able to get himself off of a sinking ship in Los Angeles.
Alcantara has pitched against the Phillies three times this go-round. His last time out against them, he lasted eight frames, giving up only four hits and a pair of earned runs.
His offense wasn’t able to provide much support, though, and he was tagged with a 2-1 loss. They’ll be sure to give a better effort during this go of it.
Who to Bet On?
When making your MLB picks, make sure to go with Miami. Alcantara has been fantastic throughout the course of this year, and it’s not hard to see him lift his side to a much-needed victory here. Take the Marlins to win outright.
MLB Pick: Marlins +1.5 (-190)
