American League Game Preview & Pick
The Texas Rangers will visit Boston to face the Red Sox in a pivotal American League matchup tonight.
It’s been a rocky season for the Rangers. After winning the World Series last year, they’re at 55-63 on the season. We’re currently in the middle of August, and there really isn’t a lot of baseball left on the schedule.
Texas is still searching for answers and hasn’t gotten any.

On the other hand, the Red Sox are 61-55 in the MLB standings but would effectively miss the playoffs if the regular season ended today. Boston is behind the Orioles/Yankees, Twins, Royals, and Mariners. There are only three Wild Card spots, and four teams are ahead of them. If there were any time to step on the break, it would be right now, especially after Boston has lost four consecutive games heading into this one.
In tonight’s game, the Red Sox are favorites at home, sitting at -127. Meanwhile, the total is at 9.5, with the Over juiced to -115.

Starting Pitchers
Tyler Mahle (TEX)
- Tyler Mahle has only thrown to 21 batters this season.
- Mahle returned against the Astros on August 6 and pitched five innings while allowing one run.
- The right-hander only struck out two batters in that game.
Brayan Bello (BOS)
- Brayan Bello has allowed a .220 ISO and wOBA of .349 to his last 121 batters faced this season.
- Lefties have smacked a .293 ISO and wOBA of .400 against Bello over the last month.
- The right-hander has allowed nearly 30% of line drives to his last 121 batters this year.
Tyler Mahle came back from Tommy John surgery in 2023. Don’t expect him to pitch very deep in this game, as this is just his second game back.
On the other hand, Brayan Bello has dominated righties as a right-handed batter. Still, the lefties in the Texas lineup have plenty of potential against him heading into tonight’s game.
We’ll attack Bello with our MLB picks today.
Team Analysis
Texas Rangers
- The Texas Rangers are more than seven games back from the playoffs.
- Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom are still on the shelf. Those two were expected to be major contributors down the stretch.
- Other than Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, the offense has struggled to stay consistent.
Boston Red Sox
- Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox used an inappropriate slur to fans during the sixth inning of yesterday’s game. Duran could potentially face some discipline for this.
- The Red Sox promoted top prospects Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kyle Teel to top Triple-A. Those three could eventually make an impact with the big league club in September.
We’ll provide our favorite Rangers vs Red Sox betting picks below.

Tyler Mahle Looks Sharp
Although Tyler Mahle didn’t earn a bunch of strikeouts in his first start since 2023, he held the Astros to a .050 ISO and wOBA of .263. Mahle also walked 4.8% of batters and allowed only 11.1% of line drives.
When he pitches more, we’ll have a better sample size of his work. But for now, there are somewhat higher expectations for Mahle, who impressed in his Texas debut.
He’ll go up against the Boston Red Sox, who have had success against righties lately. The lineup is filled with lefties, who have hit a .240 ISO and wOBA of .396 against righties over the last month. This is an area where Mahle could struggle.
Ultimately, the Astros don’t have many lefties in their lineup. Mahle only faced five lefties in his last game and allowed 75% of fly balls with a wOBA of .356.
Still, there’s also a higher chance that Mahle will deliver more strikeouts against Boston’s lineup, which has struck out 23.4% of the time against righties over the last month.
With Mahle on the mound, this matchup is one of the most anticipated games on the MLB tonight schedule.
Brayan Bello’s Struggles Against Lefties
The righty Brayan Bello will take the hill for the Red Sox. He’s been terrific against righties but can’t seem to figure out lefties.
Bello has allowed a .232 ISO and wOBA of .375 to 248 lefties this season. However, over the last month, he’s given up a .293 ISO and wOBA of .400 to his previous 65 lefties.
Additionally, Bello has allowed 52.9% of hard contact and has struck out only 12.3% of batters.
That won’t work out well for Bello, who will face a Rangers lineup with most lefties in it. Those five lefties have hit a .191 ISO and have only struck out 20.1% of the time against righties over the last month.
While Boston might have the more impactful offense, the Rangers are likelier to succeed against Bello than the Red Sox do against Mahle.
Let’s back the Rangers on the road at +114. That’ll be one of our main Rangers vs Red Sox betting picks for the day.
