We’re five rounds into the eighth season of ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, and we’ve already seen a handful of exciting races. But the battle for the Formula E crown is far from over as drivers head to Monaco for the 2022 Monaco E-Prix this Saturday, April 30.
It will mark Monaco’s fourth Formula E race and the first time we’ll see the new Gen3 cars on the track, promising another exciting day of racing.
Dubbed as the “most powerful, fastest and lightest cars to date”, the Gen3 cars will help draw a more precise line between the top drivers and the rest, but knowing how demanding the Monaco track is, the better equipment won’t guarantee success to everyone.
Last races records
As it stands now, Mitch Evans is the hottest driver in Formula E, having entered the Rome E-Prix doubleheader with just one point, but thanks to his phenomenal driving, the 27-year-old won both races and collected the maximum 50 points – helping him jump to the fourth place in the standings
He is still short of Stoffel Vandoorne in third, Robin Frijns in second, and the current leader Jean-Éric Vergne, who sits atop of the standings with 60 points. All four have proven to be a threat, but we must also not forget about Round 1 winner and reigning champion Nyck de Vries, who sits in eighth with 26 points.
Last season, António Félix da Costa dominated on the track, taking the pole and the win. On the other side, Mercedes retired early – Vandoorne was involved in an accident, whereas de Vries suffered an electrical issue. Another thing to note is that Sébastien Buemi is the most successful driver in Monaco, having won the race in 2015 and 2017.
However, he has since not finished on the podium and given his past showings (17th, 13th, eighth, 16th, ninth), it does seem unlikely for the Swiss driver to reclaim the Monaco crown.

2022 Monaco E-Prix Betting Analysis
Mitch Evans
Many sports betting guides will tell you to watch out for Mitch Evans ahead of the 2022 Monaco E-Prix, and we must agree. The Australian driver had a rough start to the season with a 10th, 21st, and 19th place finishes in Saudi Arabia and Mexico but has since found his form.
The 27-year-old was unstoppable during the Rome doubleheader and won both of the last two races to catapult himself into the upper part of the standings and is now just nine points short of dethroning Vergne at the top of the list.
The form Evans has shown last week alone is enough for us to keep an eye out on him, but he has also done well in Monaco previously. Evans finished the 2021 race in third place and has not placed worse than 10th in the remaining two appearances (10th in 2017, 6th in 2019).
Jean-Éric Vergne
Jean-Éric Vergne has yet to win a race this season, but there is a good reason he is the current Formula E leader and why betting guides have him billed as one of the favourites to win in Monaco. The French driver is easily the most consistent driver of the year, as he has not placed worse than eighth across the first five races.
Moreover, he had not placed worse than fourth in his last four. That stretch includes a bronze medal from Mexico and a fourth and runner-up finish in Italy. Adding to that, Vergne won the Monaco race in 2019 and finished fourth last season.
With his form and past record on the track, it’s hard to ignore Vergne as one of the main Formula E odds favorites to win his second Monaco race.
Robin Frijns
Robin Frijns finished the 2021 Monaco E-Prix as runner-up, marking his best placement on the track following a 12th and a 17th-place finish in 2017 and 2019. Interestingly, his silver medal from 2021 was also his best race result (besides 2nd in Diriyah ePrix) of the season.
Frijns has won just two Formula E races in his career – both in the 2018/19 season and has since collected seven podium finishes (six runners-ups). That isn’t great, but Frijns has three podiums this season alone, with runner-up finishes from Diriyah and Rome. Moreover, he claimed bronze in the last race in Italy.
Like his main two competitors, Frijns is in excellent form, and he had delivered on this track last year.
Updates
There isn’t any big news heading into this weekend’s race, albeit there are a few things about the race we must touch on.
- Sébastien Buemi is the most successful driver of Monaco E-Prix, with two wins in 2015 and 2017; however, he has not won nor finished on the podium since.
- Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team heads to Monaco as the leading team, but the Mercedes drivers have not been as successful since the first week, with just one podium across the last three races. Moreover, Mercedes have yet to claim a podium in Monaco.
- According to the Formula E stats, Renault and Techeetah-DS are the most successful teams in Monaco with two wins apiece; granted, Techeetah-DS have won both of the last two.
- The driver who has claimed pole has won every single edition of the Monaco E-Prix.
- Despite their lack of success on the track, Mercedes claimed the fastest laps in 2021, thanks to Stoffel Vandoorne.
2022 Monaco E-Prix Betting Preview
The 2022 Monaco E-Prix promises another exciting race, featuring a handful of drivers who can be considered strong favorites to claim the W. Moreover, we will see the debut of Gen3 cars on the track, which adds just another layer of complexity.
But even though it’s hard to say which driver has the best chance to come out ahead, there is one driver we’re most excited about heading into the eighth race of the 2022 Formula E pick racing season.
2022 Monaco E-Prix Betting Prediction
Evans is definitely the hottest driver heading to Monaco thanks to his performance in Italy, but despite his success, we have to side with Jean-Éric Vergne. Admittedly, Vergne has not produced as much as Evans of late, but remember that success in Italy won’t necessarily translate to strong results in Monaco.
The track is vastly different, and it will produce new challenges for the drivers, and only a few have proven that they can overcome them in the past. One of those drivers is Vergne. He won the Monaco race in 2019 and did well last year when he placed fourth.
Admittedly, Vergne has yet to win a race in 2022 but based on his form and past showings here, he is bound to find some success sooner or later.
Prediction: Jean-Éric Vergne to win
