Newgarden’s Oval Mastery Will Be Tough to Beat
Anybody who follows IndyCar knows when it comes to ovals, there is Josef Newgarden and there is everyone else. Since joining Team Penske for the 2017 season, Newgarden has 14 wins on ovals. The rest of Sunday’s Hy-Vee One Step 250 field has a combined 14 victories. Scott Dixon has five of those, and five belong to Will Power. Pato O’Ward’s two wins make him the only driver with more than one oval victory since 2017.
Newgarden’s success over ovals and Iowa Speedway, in particular, is evident in the IndyCar betting odds. Newgarden is a prohibitive +180 favorite with no other driver less than +600. Bettors have to decide if they want to back the favorite or try and beat Newgarden with a high-priced driver. The Hy-Vee One Step betting preview is going to play it safe and back the favorite.
There are plenty of factors in Newgarden’s favor here. He won both races last year and one of the two in 2022. He’s consistently tough at the track and while his odds aren’t great, they’re not bad considering his dominance of this event. Play Newgarden at +180 to win Sunday’s Hy-Vee First Step 250.

Hy-Vee One Step 250 Betting Analysis
The Hy-Vee One Step 250 betting preview notes Iowa Speedway is different than most other ovals with its short length and variable banking. Its .875-mile distance sees lap times under 18 seconds, so the slightest of errors can cost a driver in a big way. Newgarden is comfortable over the track and believes it fits his style. He has led 1,847 laps at the track during his career. The active driver with the second-most laps led is Power with 383.
Newgarden could use a big weekend. He’s 143 points out of the lead entering the doubleheader weekend in Iowa. Series leader Alex Palou traditionally hasn’t had a lot of success over the track. This gives Newgarden a golden opportunity to gain ground in the season championship standings.
The Hy-Vee One Step 250 betting preview notes there are two different races being held at Iowa Speedway this weekend. Saturday’s race is the Hy-Vee Homefront 250, presented by Instacart. The One Step 250 takes place on Sunday.

Hy-Vee One Step 250 Previous Winners and Betting Trends
When talking about previous winners, you pretty much begin and end with Newgarden. He’s won four of the last six races held at the track and no other active driver comes close to matching what he’s done the last seven years. The favorite has done as well as Newgarden, whose success over the track has received plenty of attention.
Power has a record seven poles at Iowa Speedway, but has gone 18 races without a victory over the track. Dixon hasn’t won in 19 tries, although he and Power typically run well at the race. One or the other has finished in the top three in six of the last seven races, and they have a combined nine top-three finishes.
Hy-Vee One Step 250 Betting Picks
Bet on Josef Newgarden at +180 to win Sunday’s Hy-Vee One Step 250 IndyCar race. He’s the most dominant IndyCar driver over the track and should be at the top of your IndyCar predictions today. Newgarden is 10th in the season standings, but should be able to make-up ground this weekend at Iowa Speedway.
