Herta Primed For Big Effort
Pick Analysis
The biggest race on the IndyCar schedule takes place Sunday with the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500. The usual cast of characters in the IndyCar series will be joined by Kyle Larson, adding to the build-up of the race. Larson showed during Indy 500 qualifying he has the pace to keep up with the leaders. It’s a question of race craft, as IndyCar races are run differently than NASCAR, although that hasn’t stopped him from being a popular choice in people’s Indianapolis 500 predictions.
While Larson is getting most of the pre-race attention, one driver flying under the radar a bit is Colton Herta. Herta has finished in the top 10 twice in the Indianapolis 500 but is driving well right now and the pit crew is doing a solid job. At generous odds of +900, Herta is worth a wager in your Indianapolis 500 predictions. He offers good value at that price.

Indianapolis 500 Betting Analysis
There are two ways of looking at the Indianapolis 500 from a betting perspective. You can either play it safe and stick with one of the favorites or swing for the fences with a long shot. There is usually some justification for the favorites, while the Indianapolis 500 predictions with long shots are hit or miss.
Herta hasn’t had the best of luck at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the past, but he’s finished eighth or better in all five races this season. That’s been good enough to put him in third place in the IndyCar season standings. He has two podium finishes, although he’s looking for his first win of the season. Herta is a definite contender when the green flag drops and it’s Indianapolis 500 start time.
The Team Penske drivers are going to be tough. That’s why they’re among the favorites, but Herta offers a little more betting value than most drivers in the race.

Indianapolis 500 Previous Winners and Betting Trends
- The 2023 Indy 500 results saw Josef Newgarden take the checkered flag after a restart with just a half-lap remaining. It was only the third Indianapolis 500 in history to be decided by a last-lap pass. Bettors fell asleep on Newgarden last year. After opening at odds of +800, Newgarden climbed to +1400 before winning the race.
- Helio Castroneves is tied for all-times in the Indianapolis 500 with four. He won in 2001, 2002, 2009, and pulled off a stunning upset in 2021 when he paid +2800 to win the race.
- Takuma Sato is the only other driver competing in the race who has more than one Indianapolis 500 victory. Sato won the race in 2017 and again in 2020. Sato went off at +1600 odds when he won in 2020 and was +1200 when he captured the victory in 2017.
- Alex Palou went off as the favorite in last year’s Indy 500 and finished a respectable fourth. He led the race for 36 laps.
- The 2022 Indianapolis 500 was won by Marcus Ericsson, who went off at nice odds of +1300. Ericsson was +2500 in early May and was bet down leading up to the race.
Indianapolis 500 Betting Picks
Play Colton Herta at +900 to win the Indianapolis 500. He’s racing well so far this season and has been consistent. That’s something you need entering the Indianapolis 500. The fastest driver doesn’t always win the race, but those who race clean and make good pit stops have an advantage over some of the other drivers who will be competing.
