After a break in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, the Xfinity series returned to Michigan International Speedway last year, with A.J. Allmendinger taking home the New Holland 250.
Allmendinger is back to defend his crown in the 2022 event held Saturday, August 6th, 2022, at 2:30 PM ET.
Allmendinger has his work cut out for him in a tough field that features Xfinity wins leader Ty Gibbs, as well as:
- Josh Berry
- Noah Gragson
- Justin Allgaier
New Holland 250 betting picks could go a number of ways this weekend.

A.J. Allmendinger Analysis
NASCAR odds on the returning champ Allmendinger has some nice value for Saturday’s race. Allmendinger didn’t just win here in 2021.
He survived here as the race was extended from 125 laps to 139 due to three OT attempts. Allmendinger survived the chaos and won what was at the time his third Xfinity race of the year.
He started second, which was a huge advantage, but quickly took control and went on to lead 70 laps, just over half.
New Holland 250 Winners
Now Allmendinger aims to join the list of 2X New Holland 250 winners that includes:
- Kyle Busch
- Dale Earnhardt Jr
- Ryan Newman
- Brad Keselowski
- Denny Hamlin
Allmendinger Performance Recap
Allmendinger has three Xfinity wins this season, including last weekend at the Indianapolis Road Course, where he started in the pole and finished first.
Even though Allmendinger hasn’t won on an oval yet in 2022, he came into the 2021 New Holland 250 with very similar momentum as this year – two straight back-to-back finishes. Things are playing out like a repeat scenario.
Ty Gibbs
Allmendinger leads the Xfinity points standings with 789, while Allgaier is second with 772. Right up there with them, though, is Gibbs, who at 5/1 on Saturday is not even the race favorite.
Gragson is 4/1, and Allgaier is slightly ahead of Gibbs at 4.5/1. Gibbs may be third in points, but he leads the Xfinity series with four wins this season.
He’s already clinched a playoff berth by winning in Las Vegas, Atlanta, Richmond, and at the Road America.
Gibbs started 10th here in 2021 but did not make much headway en route to a 13th-place finish. He did lead a lap, which is somewhat impressive in his only Xfinity start of the year.
Gibbs Performance Recap
Last year as an 18-year-old, Gibbs did race in the Arca Series Henry Ford Health Systems 200 at the Michigan International Speedway, starting at the pole and leading 99 of 100 laps on his way to what was his eighth win of the season. That was his first time ever racing on this track.
The jump from Arca to Xfinity is a big one, but two weeks ago, Gibbs made his first NASCAR Cup appearance, starting from the rear of the field and finishing an impressive 16th. Now going from the Cup back to Xfinity could be a big advantage for Saturday’s race.
Brandon Jones
The odds really drop off after Sheldon Creed at 28/1, but for New Holland 250 NASCAR betting picks, it’s probably going to be a bigger name that captures the checkered flag.
- Allmendinger
- Tyler Reddick
- Austin Dillon
- Denny Hamlin
Jones Performance Recap
Jones is a solid mid-tier play for this race with a nice ROI at 15/1. His recent trends aren’t great – finishing out of the top 10 in four straight – but he’s got a nice course history.
Jones finished second at Michigan International Speedway last year, even while starting 24th. He was also in the top 10 in three of his four previous races prior to 2021.
New Holland 250 Betting Trends
- There hasn’t been a repeat winner since Brad Keselowski in 2009/10
- Childress or Joe Gibbs teams have won six of the last seven here
- Roush and Joe Gibbs Racing have tied with five wins here
- No racer has ever won this event three times
- Chevrolet cars have won three straight in this event
New Holland 250 Betting Pick and Prediction
Allmendinger would be a solid play, but it’s been hard to repeat at Michigan International Speedway.
Instead, Gibbs has to be the play for this week’s NASCAR schedule just because of how dominant he was here in the Arca series in 2021 and putting up a decent showing last year for it being his first Xfinity start.
NASCAR Pick: Gibbs to win (-225)
