The Georgia Bulldogs will visit the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday at the McCamish Pavillion in Atlanta. It is one of 48 NCAA basketball games today that features a few marquee matchups and conference games across the slate.
This is an annual game on the Georgia Bulldogs‘ schedule as the two teams prepare for conference play. It’ll be the first for Bulldogs coach Mike White, who is in his first season at Georgia after leaving Florida.
Both teams have started with winning records on their NCAAB schedule. Georgia is 7-2, while Georgia Tech is 5-3.
This is a nice tune-up for each team before the games start counting toward the college basketball standings for each after finals. However, it may matter come NCAA Tournament selection time if either is on the bubble.
NCAAB odds show Georgia Tech is favored by four points. The over/under is 132.5 points. Georgia is +150 on the moneyline, while Georgia Tech is -185. Here is a breakdown of the game for those making Georgia vs. Georgia Tech betting picks.
Georgia Bulldogs vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Georgia Bulldogs Stats
The Bulldogs don’t particularly have a marquee win. They have faced some subpar NCAA basketball teams, including losses to Wake Forest and Alabama-Birmingham. Their next-best win is probably St. Joe’s.
The softer schedule is certainly why the Bulldogs are the underdogs in this one. The college basketball injury report also carries some uncertainty heading into the rivalry game.
Four players carry a questionable designation: forward Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe (undisclosed); guard Kario Oquendo (undisclosed); center Frank Anselem (illness); and Bradley transfer guard Terry Roberts (illness).
Georgia has been particularly strong on the defensive side of the floor. But the offensive end needs some work.
The Bulldogs rank 261st in scoring in the nation, averaging 69.2 points per game. They are 298th at converting 41.8% of their field goals and 249th at making 32.3% of their 3-point shots. They are, however, 57th with a 74.7% free throw percentage, so they should improve from the field eventually.
Defensively, the Bulldogs are 41st at holding teams to 61.6 points per game. Their defense has held opponents to 40.7% field goal shooting, which ranks 104th, and a standout rate of 25.7% from 3-point range, which ranks 13th nationally.
Rebounding has also been a strength for Georgia.
UG averages 36.3 rebounds per game, ranking 51st, and allows 27.9 per game, ranking 38th.
Roberts has been a terrific pick-up from the transfer portal for the Bulldogs. The strong and quick guard is averaging 14.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.0 steals per game since being a Missouri Valley Conference first-team selection and was one of the best college basketball players in the transfer portal.
Oquendo has been very good at 13.7 points per game. Justin Hill is the third-leading scorer at 9.1 points per game. KyeRon Lindsay is the top rebounder at 5.4 per game.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Stats
Josh Pastner is in his seventh season as Georgia Tech’s coach and is 99-99. That includes an NIT runner-up in his first season, a postseason ban during a 17-14 campaign in 2019-20, and a first-round NCAA Tournament berth in 2021 after a 17-9 campaign.
This year’s team has lost to better competition – Utah, Marquette, and Iowa – and were underdogs in all three games. Now they are looking for their first marquee win.
Georgia Tech has similarly been better on the defensive end than on offense. The Yellow Jackets rank 119th in the nation, allowing 65.9 points per game.
The efficiency numbers have been even better. They hold teams to 39.3% on field goals, ranking 56th nationally, and 25.6% on 3-point shots, ranking 12th.
Offensively, though, they score 71.3 points per game, ranking them 210th in the nation. The efficiency numbers are even worse than their counterparts. The Yellow Jackets make 41.9% of their field goals, ranking 293rd, and 30.0% of their 3-point shots, ranking 310th.
They are making 70.5% of free throw attempts, ranking 168th, so there are signs improvement can happen.
The Yellow Jackets are 70th in pulling in 35.4 rebounds per game but are 334th in allowing 35.0 boards per contest.
Guard Miles Kelly leads the team at 13.0 points per game and makes 36.8% of 3-pointers. Dallan Coleman is averaging 10.8 points per game, and fellow guard Deivon Smith is averaging 10.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists (team-best), and 1.8 steals per game (also team-best). Forwards Ja’Von Franklin (7.0) and Jalon Moore (6.4) are the team’s leading rebounders.
There is nobody listed on Georgia Tech’s latest injury report.
Matchup Betting Trends
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets picks would have paid off the last two seasons in the rivalry. The Yellow Jackets have covered each of the last two meetings and won outright in 2021. In Pastner’s tenure, Georgia Tech is 2-3 against the spread and 1-4 straight up in the series, with the over at 3-2.
Other trends for those making Georgia vs. Georgia Tech betting picks: the road team is 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings, and the favorite is 7-2 against the spread in the last nine meetings.
Public betting data shows 74% of public bets are on the Yellow Jackets to cover the four points. 57% of public bets believe over 132.5 will hit.
For the season, the Bulldogs are 3-6 against the spread and on over/under. Georgia Tech is 5-2 against the spread and 1-6 on over/under.
Georgia Tech is 4-0 as a betting favorite, with three of those games as double digits and the other between 1 and 2.5 points. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, are 0-2 as underdogs. Both times those were in the 7.5 to 9.5 range.
Matchup Prediction
The last two games have been higher scoring in the series. Each went over 135 and over 147.5 in the past two seasons, respectively. Both offenses have struggled so far this season but would like to break out of those funks.
Georgia’s injury report is somewhat questionable. For those making Georgia vs. Georgia Tech betting picks, it may be best to wait until closer to tip-off, particularly to see if Roberts and Oquendo play.
We’ll take Georgia Tech -4 but like the over as long as the aforementioned Bulldogs are set to play.
