NFL MVP Odds Analysis
The NFL season is right around the corner, which means it’s just about time to start putting in futures bets.
Betting a futures market like the NFL MVP is one of the most fun and exciting bets a football fan can place before the season. Although the MVP is not officially announced until just before the Super Bowl, and the odds can wildly swing throughout the season, it is the most popular to wager and therefore a great option for preseason NFL bettors.
Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs is the preseason favorite to win MVP at +500, and as a two-time winner of the award — who has also led KC to consecutive Super Bowls — he is worthy of the shortest NFL odds.
But Mahomes won the award two seasons ago shortly after No. 1 wide receiver Tyreek Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins. If you’re looking for a similar scenario that would showcase value, look no further than Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, who has +800 odds to win NFL MVP.

2024 NFL MVP Betting Preview
NFL MVPs typically are on teams high in the NFL football standings, since every MVP has made the playoffs since the league expanded to 16 regular-season games in 1978.
That means if you’re wagering on the NFL MVP you’ll need to pick a quarterback whose team will be in the playoffs. The last non-QB to win the award was Adrian Peterson in 2012, and a quarterback has won the MVP in 21 of the past 25 years.
But if you want to dig even deeper into NFL expert picks for the MVP, consider the quarterback who has earned the AFC’s No. 1 seed has won the MVP in each of the past two seasons. Plus, looking at the odds to win NFL MVP, the players with the four-shortest odds are all AFC quarterbacks.
There is a dearth of dominant NFC quarterbacks, especially since back-to-back winner Aaron Rodgers is now the Jets’ signal caller. Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles could get into the conversation if the Eagles are dominant again, and Dak Prescott has a bona fide opportunity if the Cowboys somehow roll through their slate.
But considering the AFC No. 1 seed has finished with the league’s overall record two straight years, and there will be head-to-head games between each of the four shortest-odds quarterbacks, and wagering an AFC QB is the way to go.

2024 NFL MVP Betting Pick
Some will likely write off the Bills. Buffalo has had ample opportunity to seize the AFC over its four-season reign atop the conference. But dynamic No. 1 wide receiver Stefon Diggs is now Stroud’s top target in Houston while No. 2 wide receiver Gabriel Davis will be alongside Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville.
But these departures lend themselves to Allen’s potential MVP candidacy since the seventh-year quarterback will still have weapons like tight ends Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid plus receivers Chase Claypool and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
Allen’s weapons may be more modest than they were a year ago, but he is as good a dual-threat QB as there is in the NFL. So if he has a bounceback year after only tossing 29 passing TDs and throwing a career-high 18 interceptions, scores double-digit rushing touchdowns again and Buffalo finishes atop the AFC, he’ll be the MVP.
Stroud makes a great candidate with Diggs, but Houston’s schedule will be tougher. Mahomes is always a good pick, but there surely is Chiefs fatigue among the national media. Burrow is great, but can he stay healthy and will Cincinnati be able to complete the gauntlet of the AFC North, which surely is the league’s most competitive division?
Allen plays in a super-competitive division too, but Buffalo has won the AFC East four straight years. Surely there will be writers who vote for Allen because he is due.
