The Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) take to the road for the second time this season, venturing to Indianapolis for a NFL Week 3 matchup opposite the Colts (0-1-1).
There are a number of factors considered when NFL odds are released, and they are reflected in the Colts vs. Chiefs spread.
Kansas City has done little wrong this season, blowing out the Cardinals in Phoenix to open the year and then narrowly defeating the Chargers 27-24 at home. The Colts tied the Texans in Week One and were blanked by Jacksonville last week.
Still undecided on your NFL Picks for this week, keep reading to learn more about the Colts stats, the Chiefs league ranks, and much more to make a winnable wager.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Indianapolis Colts
Chiefs
Expected by many to contend for a spot in the Super Bowl, Kansas City is tied for 2nd in the NFL in scoring and ranks 6th in total yards.
A quick look at the Chiefs’ standings shows them alone atop the AFC West and one of only six unbeaten teams in football.
Colts
Big game for coach Frank Reich as the Colts were blown out as a road favorite at Jacksonville last week in a game which saw them must just 9 first downs and only 218 yards of total offense as big off-season acquisition Matt Ryan threw 3 picks and had just a 34.0 QB rating.
Kansas City Chiefs
Coming into 2022, Kansas City boasted one of the most potent offenses in the game. Adept in both the running and passing games, KC is the epitome of a balanced attack with star players and solid newcomers dotting its offensive and defensive depth charts.
Lineup Performance Recap
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has gotten out of the gate strongly with 7 touchdown passes and zero interceptions.
Despite the departure of Tyreek Hill to Miami via trade, reliable weapon Travis Kelce has continued to excel, currently leading the team with 13 catches for 172 yards.
After five seasons in Pittsburgh Steelers, free agent signee JoJo Smith-Schuster has become one of Mahomes’ favorite targets, hauling in nine balls for 89 yards.
Chiefs’ Offense
As a true indication of the team’s offensive balance, six different players have caught TD passes.
Veteran defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s unit has been susceptible to the pass in the early going, ranking in the bottom third of the league (21st) in pass defense and allowing 358.5 yards a game, 18th best.
Indianapolis Colts
The bright spots have been few and far between for the Colts through two games. The 20-20 road tie at Houston was somewhat respectable, but then the wheels fell off Frank Reich’s squad in a 24-0 blanking in Jacksonville.
When considering the Colts vs. Chiefs spread, those backing the home side have to hope Ryan returns to his All-Pro ways.
Running back Jonathan Taylor has been solid thus far, rushing for 161 yards on 31 touches against Houston but only going 9-for-54 against Jacksonville.
Colts at the Stats
Looking at the Colts stats paints somewhat of a mixed picture. Due in large part to its offensive explosion in Week 1, Indy ranks 10th in total yards, 10th through the air, and 12th on the ground while being dead last in points per game.
Defensively, they have allowed the ninth fewest yards in football and all of their metrics place them in the top half of the league.
Team Season Forecast
Kansas City Chiefs
Despite the losses of Hill and standout defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, experts, oddsmakers, and fans alike expected the Kansas City Chiefs to win double-digit games and be a factor in January and potentially February. Given the presence of Mahomes and Reid, the red and gold will always be a team to be respected.
Indianapolis Colts
Those holding season win total over (10.5) tickets will be watching this one closely as a loss will make reaching 11 wins a tall task.
Despite the third-easiest schedule in football based on last season’s records, the Colts will need to see improved production from Ryan and a healthy Michael Pittman, who, after hauling in 9 balls for 121 yards in Week 1, missed the Jacksonville game and is questionable with a quadriceps injury this week.
What to Expect from this Matchup?
In studying the Colts vs. Chiefs spread, it is hard to go against Kansas City, although the Colts are in a must-win spot at home to avoid starting the 2022 season winless at 0-2-1.
NFL Pick: Colts +7 (-130)
NFL Pick: Chiefs (-275)
