The path to Super Bowl LVII can take many different roads. But it has been some time since a quarterback that didn’t have a superstar label led his team to glory in the Super Bowl.
When it comes to the underrated quarterbacks for the 2022-23 season, many prospects hope to take a step forward and make a name for themselves.
After Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford won during the past two seasons, quarterbacks around the league are hoping to follow in their footsteps. Here’s a look at the top five underrated quarterbacks for the upcoming season.
1. Mitchell Trubisky: Pittsburgh Steelers
When it comes to the NFL schedule, the former first-round pick won’t get a lot of time to settle in for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers will play three of their first five games on the road and will have to worry about two divisional rivals — the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals — and a home game against the New England Patriots, who made the playoffs last season.
Trubisky Stats
Trubisky spent last season as a backup with the Buffalo Bills and had a solid sophomore season in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, throwing for 3,223 yards and 24 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
However, his stats declined in the next two seasons before the organization soured on him. Signing with Pittsburgh put Trubisky in a more stable situation.
However, he will have to worry about fending off Kenny Pickett, who the Steelers selected in the first round.
What Are the Chances for Crubisky Making to the Super Bowl?
Low. Pittsburgh has more problems than Trubisky would be able to fix on his own. However, playing with the Steelers is a chance to revitalize his career that had stalled in Chicago.
2. Kirk Cousins: Minnesota Vikings
NFL player stats show that Kirk Cousins hasn’t come through in the clutch. However, the Vikings’ signal-caller isn’t quite the patsy he is perceived to be.
Cousins is 33-29-1 in four seasons as the starter in Minnesota. Cousins has shown the ability to make plays and doesn’t turn the ball over much.
In Cousins’ tenure with Minnesota, he has passed for 16,387 yards, 124 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions.
With a new coach and a solid running game behind him, Cousins may benefit from hearing another voice as head coach.
What Are the Chances for Cousins Making to the Super Bowl?
Low. Minnesota has a solid offense but is stuck in a division with the Green Bay Packers, who again look to be strong this season.
The Vikings will need Cousins to show they can win big games if they are seriously going to challenge the franchise’s first title.
3. Baker Mayfield: Carolina Panthers
Making NFL picks on if Baker Mayfield will find success in his new home is impossible to say. After leading Cleveland to a playoff win in 2020 after the Browns hadn’t won a playoff game since 1994, everything went wrong for Mayfield and Cleveland in 2021.
An injury hit Mayfield’s productivity last season, and he went 6-8 as a starter in 14 games. Mayfield passed for 3,010 yards with 16 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season.
He has passed more than 3,000 yards every year since he came into the league. From an outside perspective, he seems to be a strong leader when things are going well.
What Are the Chances for Cousins Making to the Super Bowl?
Low. Carolina has some exciting pieces on offense, but Panthers coach Matt Rhule has yet to put it all together as a coach. If he doesn’t put it together this year, he will likely be looking for another line of employment.
4. Derek Carr: Las Vegas Raiders
Anyone betting NFL odds after Derek Carr’s first few seasons would have likely wagered on him winning at least one playoff game.
However, Carr has only played in one playoff game during his eight-year career. A season-ending injury forced Carr to miss the playoffs in 2016, a season where the Raiders were 12-3 when he was under center.
Carr hasn’t been selected to the Pro Bowl since 2017 despite passing for 4,000 yards or more in each of the past four seasons. He also has never been selected All-Pro.
What has held Carr back is Las Vegas not getting their act together as an organization. During his career, the Raiders are 57-70 in games they started.
What Are the Chances for Carr Making to the Super Bowl?
Moderate. Las Vegas Raiders had an exciting offense last season and gave Cincinnati all it could handle in the first round of the AFC playoffs. The Raiders will need to find a way to navigate through a division that improved significantly.
5. Matt Ryan: Indianapolis Colts
Ryan has been in the league so long his reputation has taken a hit since the Falcons have fallen off. However, Atlanta’s tumble down the standings wasn’t all Ryan’s fault, though he has thrown double-digit interceptions in the past three seasons. Ryan went 120-102 as a starter in Atlanta with a 4-6 record in the postseason.
Ryan being traded to Indianapolis could revitalize his career as the Colts had a devastating running game last season with Jonathan Taylor.
If Ryan can play solid football, he may find himself in a similar situation to Brady and Stafford. He could be a steady veteran presence that gets a franchise over the top.
What Are the Chances for Ryan Making to the Super Bowl?
Moderate. Indianapolis should be among the favorites in the AFC. The Colts will need to figure out if their defense will be able to slow down the favorites, Kansas City and Buffalo, enough to break through in the AFC.
