Chicago Bears vs. New York Giants
Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears have surprised some folks by starting out the year 2-1 as they enter Week 4 in a three-way tie for first in the NFC Central with the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.
They lost their only divisional game so far to Green Bay in NFL Week 2, with their victories coming against the likes of the 49ers and Texans.
Bears’ Strengths
The Bears’ strengths seem obvious through the first three games and ones that experts always say travel well: defense and a running game.
Chicago is second in the NFL in rushing, but that could have taken a hit with an NFL injury to David Montgomery in the win over Houston this past weekend.
Khalil Herbert stepped up in his absence in a big way, rushing for 157 yards and two touchdowns, and will become a popular pickup on the waiver wire in fantasy leagues across the country.
Chicago Bears Defense
Defensively, two players are standing out already, with Roquan Smith leading the NFL in tackles and Eddie Jackson tied for second in the league with his two interceptions.
And while Justin Fields is contributing to that stellar run game, the Bears’ passing attack has a lot to be desired early on.
Chicago has completed just 23 passes in the first three games, the lowest number of completions for any team since the 1978 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (21).
They’ll have to get something going through the air if they expect to compete week to week in today’s NFL.
New York Giants
Much like with the Bears, many fans are surprised to see the Giants with a winning record heading into the fourth week of the campaign.
New York had a legit chance to be undefeated coming into this one but failed to capitalize on the opportunity of a Monday night home battle with the Dallas Cowboys and their backup quarterback.
Giants Lineup Breakdown
Similarly to Chicago, the G-Men rely on their weapons in the backfield as Saquon Barkley has the second-most rushing yards in the NFL (behind only Nick Chubb), and he scored on a nifty 36-yard scamper in the third quarter against Dallas, his second TD of the year.
Defensively, New York is much improved under first-year defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, but their weaknesses lie at the wide receiver position and on the offensive line.
The Giants’ wideouts haven’t stepped up to help Daniel Jones, and as a result, on Monday night, Dallas was able to load the box and bring the heat on the Giants’ young quarterback.
The Cowboy defense generated 24 pressures in NFL Week 3, they’re most as a unit since 2017 and the second-most by any team over the last two seasons.
Team’s Season Forecast
Season Forecast for Chicago Bears:
Not only have the Bears only completed 23 passes so far, but they’ve also only attempted 45.
That is not a recipe for success in the modern game, and this 2-1 start will quickly evaporate if they’re unable to compliment their impressive run game with an aerial attack.
The Bears schedule isn’t very favorable after this, so things will need to improve soon.
Season Forecast for New York Giants:
When Dak Prescott injured his thumb in the Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the Bucs, the door opened for the New York Giants (and perhaps Commanders) to make the NFC East much more competitive than the experts thought entering the year.
It seems clear that the Eagles are the class of the division, but the rest of the makeup is still up for grabs. The Giants stats won’t jump off the page at you, but they’re still in the thick of it.
What to Expect from this Matchup?
As you may have gleaned from our Giants vs Bears predictions, these two are awfully similar. Both had minimal expectations coming into the season.
Both have strong running games and competent defenses. Both have first-year head coaches. And both franchises are still evaluating whether their quarterback is the long-term answer, though the Giants are much further along in that process and have less time to decide.
Bears vs. Giants Prediction and Best Bets
Fans and bettors shouldn’t expect a highlight-filled matchup, but rather a knock-down, drag-em-out slugfest decided in the trenches. The Giants are favored due to the home-field advantage, but everywhere else, it seems pretty even.
Our Giants vs Bears predictions lead us to take the points with New York coming off a short week against a rival. NFL odds will move throughout the week, so make sure to shop for the best price.
