Betting on individual games of the NFL season in early June is a tough gambit. While there may be some value in getting early lines, some of that value may be diminished by a trade or injury. That could happen between now and September.
The futures market offers the best value for 2023 NFL early season odds. Usually, NFL odds at this time of year have many of the potential winners at plus money. While there is still a risk of injury and calamity, betting on a futures market can pay dividends for those that are patient.
AFC East race will be tight
The Buffalo Bills (+120) have won three straight division titles, but the rest of the division is ready to catch up. The New York Jets, who haven’t won the division since 2002, dealt for star quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the offseason. While there is some chance the move could flop, Rodgers instantly gave the young Jets (+250) new credibility.
The Miami Dolphins (+300) are also priced close to the other two teams. Miami had a strong start to last season that was later derailed by injuries to starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. If the Dolphins can keep Tagovailoa healthy, Miami could be a major factor in what promises to be an exciting race on the NFL schedule.
Stop the fight in AFC West
Betting on 2023 NFL early season odds will show that the Kansas City Chiefs (-182) are one of the highest-priced teams to win the division. Despite the Los Angeles Chargers (+330) having a superstar quarterback in Justin Herbert. And, the Denver Broncos (+600) bringing in Sean Payton as coach, the seven-time defending division champs are heavy favorites to repeat.
The Chargers may be worth a heavy look considering Herbert was able to lead them to the playoffs last season. However, Los Angeles will have to respond from a devastating loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the playoffs.
Is this the Cowboys year?
Dallas has an issue with NFL team stats. The Cowboys’ offense struggled for most of last season because of quarterback Dak Prescott was out with an injury. By the time he returned, Philadelphia (-121) had built too big of a lead in the division to be caught.
The Cowboys (+190) will return Prescott this season and also see star Micah Parson return on defense. Dallas should make this an exciting battle for the NFC East. This is a division that won’t feature many division-winner picks that bettors are willing to put in NFL picks and parlays. The Giants are an unknown, New York (+700) made the playoffs and won a playoff game last season, but is likely due to regress some.
NFC West will be an adventure
2023 NFL early season odds show how much the landscape of football can switch so quickly. The division just a few seasons ago featured some of the best quarterback NFL player stats in the league. Now, there isn’t one reliable quarterback set to start the season.
The San Francisco 49ers (-182) are the favorite, but starter Trey Lance has struggled to stay on the field. Brock Purdy shocked the NFL world by being a strong player as a seventh-round pick, but will now need to prove he can replicate that. The Seattle Seahawks (+240) rode journeyman Geno Smith to the playoffs last season. But he will have to prove he can continue what he’s built late in his career.
The Los Angeles Rams (+800) are an interesting look at such long odds. Matthew Stafford will have to prove he can be healthy if they are going to contend.
