San Francisco Looks to Buck the Trend Against Eagles
Quarterbacks were the center of conversation for both San Francisco and Philadelphia during the offseason. That talk remained after Week 1 of the regular season, but for a different reason. Take a look to the 49ers at Eagles betting preview.
Jimmy Garoppolo and Jalen Hurts, both rumored to be moved during the offseason, led their respective teams to wins last week. Garoppolo and the 49ers held off a late surge by Detroit for a 41-33 win, while Hurts guided the Eagles to a dominant win over Atlanta, 32-6.
Game Odds
Despite having lost seven of its previous nine games against the Eagles, San Francisco is a 3-point favorite (-105) on Sunday, according to main sportsbooks.
Bettors backing the home team to cover the spread have -115 odds. San Francisco carries -155 odds on the Moneyline, while the Eagles are +135 straight up.
BetUS also has the Over/Under set at 49.5 points with -110 odds on either side of the number.
Hurts So Good
The second-year pro out of Alabama and Oklahoma completed 27 of 35 passes for 264 yards with three touchdowns.
Hurts also racked up 62 yards on the ground as he produced more yards from scrimmage than the entire Falcons team, 326-260. At least for one week, Hurts proved he could be the man in Philly.
Just as Planned?
By keeping Jimmy G on the team after drafting Trey Lance with the third overall pick, the 49ers brass hoped Garoppolo would have extra motivation to keep his starting job.
Like Hurts, Jimmy G proved that to be correct for at least one week. Garoppolo threw for 314 yards with a touchdown as the ‘9ers dominated early with a 31-10 lead.
Next Man Up
Raheem Mostert left Sunday’s game after just two carries and announced that he would be missing the rest of the season earlier this week due to his knee injury.
Elijah Mitchell came to the rescue with 19 totes for 104 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown for a much-needed boost to the 49ers’ ground attack.
Immediate Impact
Devonta Smith was must-see TV during his time at Alabama. The rookie wide receiver proved, despite his thin frame, that his game translates to the next level.
Smith’s first NFL reception was an 18-yard touchdown from Hurts. Smith finished the game with six grabs for 71 yards to lead the Philly WRs.
Other Key Stats
The Eagles allowed just 260 yards last week and sacked Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan a trio of times. Although they surrendered 124 rushing yards, the Eagles kept the Falcons’ passing game at bay with just 136 yards.
Darius Slay allowed just two receptions for 14 yards and had a quarterback rating of 42.3. He will be tested this week against Deebo Samuel.
The 49ers’ top wideout had nine receptions for 189 yards and a touchdown last week against a porous Lions’ secondary. George Kittle also hauled in four passes for 78 yards in the win for the 49ers.
Game Trends
Philly has won seven of the last 10 meetings in the matchup, while the 49ers are just 2-8 against the spread in those games. San Francisco is also just 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games overall but is 13-5 straight up over the last 18 road games.
The Eagles are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 September games but are 5-1 ATS in their last six games at home.
The Over has hit in four of the previous six games for the 49ers, while the Under has hit in eight of the previous 11 games for Philly.
