It has not yet been a full week since NFL signings could take place. NFL free agency opened at 4:00 p.m. ET on March 15, though players and teams began engaging – legally – at noon on March 13.
Perhaps the biggest news is what has not yet happened. Longtime Green Bay Packers quarterback said that his desire is to play for the New York Jets after 18 seasons in Titletown. But a trade has not yet occurred.
NFL odds represent the probability of a team winning a game or the Super Bowl championship.
It was one of the bigger surprises if only to hear it come from his voice, but with a standout defense, they should perform well in the NFL 2023-24 season, and his NFL MVP odds should be high.
Carousel Spinning
The quarterback carousel has been spinning, and some of the moves will tweak some NFL predictions for next season. But there were not the bombshell trades of a season ago, as veterans had some movement.
Lamar Jackson
Though the biggest name still out there is former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. It is remarkable after the NFL team stats that he put up that the Ravens would not agree to an extension through talks with Jackson, who is his own agent.
Derek Carr & Jimmy Garoppolo
Derek Carr signed with the New Orleans Saints for four years, $150 million. He got benched by the Las Vegas Raiders during last season’s NFL schedule as a sign that they were going to move on. So the Vegas Raiders added Jimmy Garoppolo on a deal for three years and worth $67.5 million.
Coach Josh McDaniels reunites with Garoppolo after the two worked together in New England Patriots. Garoppolo was going to be the odd man out in San Francisco 49ers against Trey Lance and Brock Purdy.
Taylor Heinicke
Elsewhere, fringe starter Taylor Heinicke signed with the Atlanta Falcons for two years, $20 million, veteran Andy Dalton got a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers, Baker Mayfield signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ditto for Gardner Minshew and the Colts, Jameis Winston and the Saints and Jacoby Brissett and the Washington Commanders.
Impactful Moves
There were quite a few NFL signings that were not going to turn heads necessarily but are likely going to make a difference.
Orlando Brown Jr.
One that immediately stands out is offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. leaving the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC rival Cincinnati Bengals for four years, $64 million. That is a big change for two teams who have met in the NFL playoff bracket with some consistency.
In addition to the aforementioned Rodgers move, the New York Jets added his former top target in wide receiver Allen Lazard.
Hayden Hurst & Mike Gesicki
Two other tight ends who signed elsewhere were Hayden Hurst leaving the Bengals for the Panthers on a three-year, $21.75 million deal, and Mike Gesicki, moving within the division from the Miami Dolphins to the Patriots on a one-year deal.
Panthers Shakeup
The Panthers knew they needed to move in the NFL standings, so they hired Frank Reich, who was fired by the Colts last season, to be the next coach. They are also making several key NFL signings.
In addition to Dalton and Hurst, the Panthers have signed wide receiver Adam Thielen from the Minnesota Vikings on a three-year, $25 million deal. New running back Miles Sanders signed a deal for four years, $25 million. They re-signed center Bradley Bozeman for $18 million over three years. And they added defensive lineman Shy Tuttle.
They should become more difficult in NFL matchups next season, especially on offense.
Broncos Beef
Sean Payton leads a Denver Broncos team that had consistent additions to the NFL injury report. They clearly looked to beef up the offensive line when they signed guard Ben Powers for four years, $52 million, and tackle Mike McGlinchey for five years, $87.5 million.
Awkward Signings
The Patriots allegedly would not meet receiver Jakobi Meyers’ needs. He signed with the Raiders for three years, $33 million, which is what the Patriots signed veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster for. Perhaps they liked his NFL player stats better.
