2023-24 Vezina Trophy Candidates
Ilya Sorokin, New York Islanders +400
Sorokin, 27 years old, has come into his own as a goaltender with the Islanders. He allowed just 2.34 goals per game a season ago, which was 6th in the league. He also was Top 3 in save percentage, as he turned away 92.4% of the shots at him.
Sorokin led the NHL in shut-outs with 6. The success did not lead to the Islanders winning a ton more games, but the off-season hopefully can shore up some pieces for the NHL team. When looking at Vezina Trophy Winner odds, Sorokin is the favorite at +400.
Igor Shesterkin, New York Rangers +600
Another goaltender from New York, and many have this Vezina Trophy Prediction of Shesterkin winning. A season ago, he played in 58 games and won 37 of them. He was 9th in goals against, with 2.48 per game, and had a .916 save percentage. Shesterkin had 3 shut-outs as well.
The 27-year-old got 7 games of playoff experience under his belt and was fantastic, allowing just 1.96 goals per game, but the New York Rangers lost the series 4-3. He will be back and better than ever in 2023-2024.
Juuse Saros, Nashville Predators +600
When looking at Vezina Trophy Odds – Saros has to be on your list. The Predators did not live up to expectations a season ago, but it was not Saros to blame. He won 33 games in between the pipes and allowed less than 2.7 goals per game.
The 28-year-old from Finland has now played in 269 career games. Saros has 147 wins and 20 shut-outs. Nashville added some pieces in the off-season in hopes they can be a postseason team and the world can see what Saros can do in big games.
Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets +700
The Winnipeg Jets netminder played in 64 games a season ago. The 30-year-old American has been with the Jets since being drafted in 2012. The team is starting to see his true talent come out. He was tied for third a season ago with 37 wins but struggled big time in the postseason allowing more than 3.4 goals per game.
The Jets will look to add some protection on the defensive end and give him a better chance to see the puck. When looking at the NHL Odds for winning the Vezina Tropgy, Hellebuyck comes in at 7/1.
Andrei Vasilevskiy, Tampa Bay Lightning +800
When looking at NHL Stats – this is a guy that is always at or near the top of goaltenders. He played in 60 games a season ago and finished with 34 wins. 4 of those were shut-out wins. He did get 6 more games under his postseason belt.
The 29-year-old from Russia will look to improve on both his 2.65 goals against and his .915 save percentage from a season ago.
Jake Oettinger, Dallas Stars +1200
The fans in Dallas love the Otter. Oettinger is just 24 years old from Minnesota. He was the first-round pick for the Stars back in 2017. A season ago, he won 37 games, allowing just 2.37 goals per game. His 5 shut-outs were tied for second in the league.
Many project Oettinger to just keep getting better and put Dallas into a spot where they are possible Stanley Cup contenders. In the postseason, he played 19 games and won 10 of them. He allowed 3.06 goals per game and finished with a .895. Look for those numbers to only be improved this season.
