There have been a few surprise packages in an open German top flight this season, but in-form Bayern Munich has cemented its place at the top of the Bundesliga standings. FC Hollywood is four points clear at the summit after a stunning run of form.
Rivals Borussia Dortmund are nine points behind in sixth, with Freiburg, RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Union Berlin all currently above Dortmund. That makes Munich the overwhelming favorite to retain its crown.
Along with winning another Bundesliga title, Bayern are among the favorites to go far in the UEFA Champions League this season. Can Munich win it all this year? Read our Bundesliga recap and check out the best Bundesliga picks and predictions.
Bayern Lead the Way
By their high standards, Bayern made a slow start to their title defense. They won their opening three but drew three and lost one of the following four. From late August to early October, the Reds won just one of six league games.
They have really found form since then, though, dropping just two points since a 1-0 loss at Augsburg in September. After drawing 2-2 in a pulsating matchup with rivals Dortmund, Bayern has won six on the spin in the Bundesliga to take control in the title race.
Julian Nagelsmann’s men are four points clear at the top of the table. They are in the Round of 16 of the Champions League and DFB-Pokal and have already won the DFL-Supercup.
Bayern knows what it takes to get the job done, as their Bundesliga stats have been incredible in recent years.
The Munich giants will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with in 2023 and beyond. See how the other clubs have fared in our Bundesliga recap, featuring the best Bayern Munich picks and predictions.
Can Anyone Stop the Bavarians?
RB Leipzig
Right now, Leipzig looks like Bayern’s closest title challenger. Marco Rose’s Red Bulls are having another fine season in the Bundesliga, collecting 28 points from 15 games.
They sit third at present, six points behind the leaders and two adrift of second. Leipzig is the second favorite +3300 to win the title.
Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund has incredibly high standards, but Edin Terzic’s side has had a disappointing Bundesliga campaign so far. The Black and Yellows have already suffered six defeats and are nine points away from the top spot.
Before the World Cup break, Dortmund lost two league games on the spin to Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach to drop even further behind. Securing a Champions League spot has to be the priority for Borussia now.
Freiburg
Freiburg has been a surprise package in Germany’s top division this season, averaging two points per game. They sit proudly in second place right now, four points behind the leaders.
Freiburg is looking to keep up their fine form, starting with three points in their first game back on their Bundesliga schedule against Wolfsburg. Victory at the Volkswagen Arena will be their fifth in six Bundesliga matches.
Eintracht Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt’s Bundesliga recap is a great one on the whole. They bounced back from a heavy 6-1 home defeat to Bayern in game one and went on to win eight of their following 14.
Winning the title may well be a step too far for last term’s UEFA Europa League winners, but they are having a far better Bundesliga season this time around. Oliver Glasner’s men sit fourth at present, and a top-four finish is the main aim for Frankfurt.
Union Berlin
Union Berlin was the surprise, early leaders of the Bundesliga after starting with five wins and two draws from seven. However, they have failed to maintain that relentless pace and have slipped down to fifth.
The early signs were promising, and Urs Fischer’s Iron Ones are certainly capable of putting another solid run together. They are the massive outsiders in the title race, however, with the bookies offering +10000 for Union to lift the trophy for the first time.
Bundesliga Odds & Prediction
Bayern was most people’s Bundesliga picks at the start of the season, and they have overcome a minor blip to take control in the title race. They are our picks to win a 33rd German league title at the end of this season.
Nagelsmann’s side could also be the ones to watch out for in the Champions League this term. Right now, just Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City is available at shorter odds. It could be worth backing Bayern to lift Europe’s biggest trophy at the current betting odds of +650.
