The English Premier League begins play for the 2022-23 season in early August, and while teams are still being built, the Premier League odds are out at nearly every sportsbook across the world. Premier League betting is amongst the most popular in the world.
Most of the teams have already started adding and subtracting players for the new season, and a couple of the big contenders have changed managers for the upcoming season.
Chelsea also finally has a new owner in American Todd Boehly, and after having their assets frozen due to the Russian attack on Ukraine, the Blues are able to add players this summer.
The summer transfer continues until September 1, so teams can still do business.
With preseason camps now open and exhibition tours about to start, now is a great time to get outright title bets in before lines change.
Premier League Outright Odds Favorites
Not surprisingly, the two-time defending champions, Manchester City, are the favorites to lift the cup again next spring. Pep Guardiola’s squad has seen its share of player movement this summer but are massive favorites to win the title at -165.
City has spent big this summer, bringing in superstar striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United. Haaland has long been rumored to be headed to the Premier League, and after scoring 62 Bundesliga goals in 67 games, the soon-to-be 22-year-old was bought by City for 51 million pounds this summer.
To make room for Haaland, City sold Gabriel Jesus to league-rivals Arsenal, and Raheem Sterling is rumored to soon be on his way to Chelsea. Midfielder Fernandinho returned home to Brazil, and his spot will be taken in the lineup by Phillips. At Leeds, Phillips played 214 games in the last eight years and debuted with England in 2020.
Haaland will play up top alongside Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden. With Phillips, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Jack Grealish, and Bernardo Silva in midfield, Guardiola has plenty of goal-producing options. City scored a league-best 99 goals in 2021-22 and had a +73 goal differential.
City stood pat so far in defense with a formidable back line that allowed just 26 goals last year. Kyle Walker, Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Oleksander Zinchenko are all great options in front of Ederson in goal. The surplus could even make Nathan Ake dispensable heading into the season if City want to bring in more revenue.
Liverpool Looking to Get Back on Top
The 2021-22 season was a very good one overall for Liverpool, but they fell just short of the Premier League title, missing out by one point. The Reds lifted the FA Cup and the League Cup while also finishing runner-up in the Champions League. In Premier League betting for the 2022-23 season, they are +250, the second-best odds in the league.
Jurgen Klopp’s squad has been busy this summer, both in additions and subtractions. They have spent more than 70 million pounds in an effort to catch up to Manchester City. The big addition was forward Darwin Nunez from Benfica, while they also added striker Fabio Carvalho from Fulham and defender Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen in Scotland.
Nunez scored 32 league goals for Benfica and brings Champions League experience to Anfield along with international play for Uruguay. The 27-year-old was highly sought after this summer, with teams from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and England linked to offers before he signed for Liverpool.
He will have his hands full replacing star forward Sadio Mane, who was sold to Bayern Munich for nearly 30 million pounds. Takumi Minamino, who mostly came off the bench and started cup games for Liverpool, has also left, sold to Monaco for 13 million pounds. Another receive, Divock Origi, has also left, signing with AC Milan on a free transfer.
After Mane left, the Reds locked down golden boot winner Mohamed Salah to a new contract and also resigned midfielder James Milner. Klopp has an embarrassment of riches up top with Salah, Nunez, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Roberto Firmino at his disposal.
Jordan Henderson captains the team from the midfield with Milner, Naby Keita, Thiago, Fabinho, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as options.
The defense slipped a little from the 2020 championship season but is still very formidable with Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Joe Gomez, among others. Alexander-Arnold is among the best defenders in the league going forward, routinely providing assists from the wing and serving up fantastic free kicks.
Alisson mans the Liverpool goal, and the Brazilian ranks amongst the best in the world. Last year, Liverpool was even with Manchester City in goals allowed at 26, and they lost just two games.
The Next Tier
Behind Manchester City and Liverpool in Premier League odds for the 2022-23 season are the rest of the “Big Six.” The other two Champions League teams, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, are both at +1400 while Manchester United is +2800 to win the title and Arsenal is +3500.
Chelsea finished third last season with 74 points after leading the league early. They have a new owner in Boehly and have yet to officially make an addition this summer. The Blues are heavily linked to Sterling, who scored 13 goals last season and 91 in seven years at Manchester City.
Defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both left for Spain on free transfers, while striker Romelu Lukaku has been loaned to Internazionale after a turbulent year back at Stamford Bridge. American winger Christian Pulisic has been linked to Juventus and other Premier League teams but, for now, is still under contract at Chelsea.
After changing managers early in the season, Spurs excelled under Antonio Conte and finished the season in fourth place, two points ahead of Arsenal. For the first time in recent memory, Spurs are making multiple moves in the summer and looking to improve their standing instead of just relying on Harry Kane and golden boot winner Heung-min Son.
So far in the summer window, Spurs have added Richarlison from Everton for 50 million ponds and Yves Bissouma for 25 million from Brighton & Hove Albion. They also brought in Croatian star Ivan Perisic on a free transfer from Inter and backup goalkeeper Fraser Forster on a free from Southampton.
Richarlison scored ten goals last season for Everton and has at least ten goals in three of the last four Premier League seasons. Perisic is a serial winner with titles at Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan while also helping Croatia to a runner-up finish at the 2018 World Cup.
Arsenal and Manchester United Trying to Reclaim Glory
Arsenal just missed out on Champions League play as they stumbled down the stretch in April and May to finish in fifth place. At +3500, they had high odds to jump up and win the title, but they have spent more than 80 million pounds this summer.
Jesus will take over at striker position for the Gunners, signing from City for 45 million pounds. Midfielder Fabio Vieira came over from Porto for 30 million pounds, and Arsenal signed American goalkeeper Matt Turner from New England Revolution. They have also added winger Marquinhos from Sao Paulo while letting striker Alexandre Lacazette leave for Lyon.
Manchester United are +2800 after their worst Premier League season ever. The Red Devils finished sixth last season and are now on their third manager in the last nine months. Erik Ten Hag took over this summer after a great run at Ajax Amsterdam and has already started rebuilding the squad that scored as many goals (57) as they allowed last season.
United let Edison Cavani, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, and Nemanja Matic walk this summer, all on free transfers. Backup goalkeeper Dean Henderson is out on loan to new Premier League team Nottingham Forest. In the biggest news of all, legend Cristiano Ronaldo could also be on his way out but, as of now, is still on the United roster for one more season.
United have been long linked to signing superstar Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, but the deal is not yet complete. United has also been linked to Lisandro Martinez, Antony, Pau Torres, Stefan de Vrij, and Paulo Dybala but are waiting on de Jong and Ronaldo’s decisions before moving forward.
Ten Hag has added defender Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord and midfielder Cristian Eriksen from Brentford. He still needs a backup goalkeeper to replace Henderson and at least one more midfielder.
Premier League Predictions
The English Premier League is almost certain to be won by one of the Big Six. Since the league’s inception in 1992-93, according to the Premier League stats, the Big Six have won 28 of the 30 titles. Manchester United has 13 of those titles, with Manchester City winning six, Chelsea five, Arsenal three, and Liverpool one. The only two exceptions were Blackburn Rovers in 1994-94 and Leicester City in 2014-15.
This title is Manchester City’s until proven otherwise. At this point in the summer, Liverpool is the only other team built to take it away from them. If looking for a longer shot in Premier League odds betting, Tottenham have made the best summer moves and also took big strides under Conte in the second half of last season.
