Big Job To Make Chelsea Competitive
The summer transfer window will add pressure to the early days of Mauricio Pochettino Chelsea reign. The incoming boss will quickly need to assess the huge squad that Todd Boehly has assembled. And move on the players that he doesn’t feel will play a role in the upcoming campaign.
Chelsea will come into the 2023-24 season after one of their worst campaigns in recent memory in Boehly’s first in charge. The Blues finished down in 12th, and exited both domestic cup competitions in the third round. For the first time in history, Chelsea went through four different managers in a single campaign. First, Thomas Tuchel started the campaign, before Graham Potter’s failed tenure led to interim runs for both Bruno Saltor and Frank Lampard.
Pressure will immediately be on the incoming boss. Meaning that the Mauricio Pochettino Chelsea relationship must begin the 2023-24 season with a run of victories.
Pochettino’s Aims For 2023-24
Despite finishing down in 12th last season, this season’s goals are unlikely to be changed. Boehly will expect the Blues to finish in the Champions League spots in 2023-24, and achieve one piece of silverware. However, both goals look like a pipedream at this stage. Given the Blues were lackluster at both ends of the field throughout the previous campaign.
Achieving a Champions League finish would almost be seen as a minor miracle at this stage, as the Blues finished 27 points off the top four last term. That is mirrored by the fact that they rarely feature in the soccer predictions to finish in the Champions League spots next season.
As well as that, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Manchester City already look lightyears ahead of the Blues in their progression. While the fact that Liverpool and Newcastle will strengthen will leave them with even more ground to make up. In truth, a positive first season in charge for Pochettino would see the Blues finishing in a European place of any description.
Will Pochettino Be Given Time?
All of the Mauricio Pochettino futures markets revolve around the length of time that the incoming boss will be in charge. Which is hardly surprising given the longest-serving manager of the Boehly-era to this point was Potter’s six-month disappointment. The American will demand results immediately, meaning that Pochettino can ill-afford to make a slow start to the upcoming season.
The former Spurs boss will be handed funding this summer to bring in the players to strengthen the squad, with a central striker likely to rank high on his wish list. Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling were the joint-highest scorers last season with nine, and both could be moved on in the summer.
However, given that Chelsea doesn’t have Champions League soccer to offer. The Blues will likely fall short in their approaches for Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic, and Harry Kane, with all leading strikers demanding that their next club is competing in the premier European competition.
How Long Will Pochettino’s Chelsea Career Last?
Chelsea fans will be hoping that the erratic Boehly has learned his lessons from last season, and that he will give Pochettino the time that he needs to create a squad capable of competing. History shows us that the Argentinean is a high-quality manager, and if given time, he could create something memorable at Stamford Bridge.
However, he will need to get off to a solid start from the opening day of the Premier League. Regardless, we find it hard to see the club firing Pochettino before at least the end of the 2023-24 Premier League season. Therefore, our soccer predictions would side with Pochettino still being the Blues head coach on the final day of the upcoming season.
- Pick: Mauricio Pochettino To Still Be Chelsea Head Coach For The Final Game Of EPL 2023-24 Season (-350)
