The Atlanta Open is the beginning of the North American hardcourt swing in the summer, which runs through the US Open within the next couple of months.
This is a 250-level event, which means that the field is not nearly as deep as the 500-level event in Washington or Masters 1000 tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati soon to come.
But there are plenty of intrigues to look forward to in this event each year, especially for fans of American players.
ATP Tour Atlanta Open Draw
This year’s Atlanta Open field is set up similar to that of years past in that the headliners are predominantly American players.
Six-time Atlanta Open champion John Isner is involved yet again, though his recent form will not make him a favorite according to tennis betting odds.
Other Americans in the draw include Wimbledon quarterfinalist:
- Taylor Fritz
- Reilly Opelka
- Frances Tiafoe
- Brandon Nakashima
Players from the Other Nations
Outside of the American contingent, there are a few intriguing players from other parts of the world worth watching in this tournament.
Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios will take part in his first tournament since his run at the All England Lawn and Tennis Club. He will be joined by fellow Australian Alex de Minaur, along with his friend off the court Andy Murray.
Atlanta Open History
The Atlanta Open has historically belonged to American players since the tournament was first played in 2010.
In the 11 editions of the tournament prior to this year’s event, Americans have won the title nine times. Americans have also finished runners-up in this tournament seven times, meaning that 16 of the 22 finalists at this tournament have hailed from the United States.
Most Prolific Champion
The most prolific champion in the history of this event is easily John Isner, who has won this title six times in his career behind his massive first serve.
Mardy Fish is the only other multiple-time champion at this event, having won it twice.
- Andy Roddick
- Nick Kyrgio
- Alex De Minaur
Are the only other champions in the history of the tournament, winning it once each.
ATP Tour Atlanta Open: Future Odds and Players Analysis
As far as making tennis predictions is concerned, how the Atlanta Open will play out will depend largely on the draw.
That is scheduled to take place later this week and will determine the path for each player to make it to the final. But there are a few players to keep an eye on regardless of their path to the championship in Atlanta.
Taylor Fritz Analysis
Taylor Fritz is the highest ranked player in the Atlanta Open field and has been playing some excellent tennis of late.
He came very close to knocking out Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon and may be the best player in Atlanta this week.
The question is how motivated he will be to perform at the highest level after what was a devastating loss to Nadal in his final match of the year on grass.
Nick Kyrgios Analysis
Nick Kyrgios had the run of his career at this year’s Wimbledon, making it to the final and taking a set off of Novak Djokovic in that final.
He might be the most talented player in this field and finally saw what he is capable of if he simply puts in the effort to do great things on the court.
Whether or not that results in him giving his all in this tournament remains to be seen, but Kyrgios will be an attraction no matter how hard he tries.
Maxime Cressy Analysis
Maxime Cressy is always an interesting player in the outright markets of these 250-level events. He plays a strictly serve and volley style on his serve, which makes it difficult for opponents to score return points against him.
In an event where many top players are not giving their best, his style could help him overcome some of the tougher opponents in the draw.
As far as dark horse candidates to win this tournament are concerned, Brandon Nakashima could be worth a look here.
Brandon Nakashima Analysis
He is one of the lower-seeded players in the Atlanta Open draw, but his consistent level of play could make him worth backing to win this tournament outright.
Nakashima is also coming off of a respectable run at Wimbledon and has done well on the American hardcourt swing in the recent past.
