The first Grand Slam of the 2023 tennis season gets underway on January 16 at Melbourne Park in Australia. The Australian Open is the first of four Grand Slams and one of the oldest tournaments in the world.
Australian Ash Barty was a champion on the women’s side in 2022 but subsequently announced her surprising retirement. An Australian hasn’t won the men’s draw, however, in 44 years.
Top Australian Open contenders in the men’s draw include Nick Kyrgios (+1000) and Alex De Minaur (+6000).
This year’s Australian Open hopefully won’t be marked by controversy. Former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic was unable to participate in last year’s tournament due to his COVID-19 vaccination status. He recently had his Visa reinstated and will be allowed the opportunity to win his 22nd Grand Slam and 10th Australian Open.
Read on for our Australian Open predictions.
Men’s Outright Odds
- Novak Djokovic +110
- Carlos Alcaraz +550
- Daniil Medvedev +650
- Nick Kyrgios +1000
- Rafael Nadal +1100
- Alexander Zverev +1400
- Jannik Sinner +1400
- Felix Auger-Aliassime +1800
- Stefanos Tsitsipas +2000
- Holger Rune +2200
Other notable names outside the top 10 betting favorites for the Australian Open contenders include 2022 US Open and French Open finalist Casper Ruud (+2400), Taylor Fritz (+3300), Andrey Rublev (+5000), Frances Tiafoe (+5000), and Australian Alex De Minaur (+6000).
Novak Djokovic (+110)
It’s no surprise that Djokovic leads Australian Open contenders in tennis picks. He’s a nine-time champion in Australia and ended his 2022 season on a positive note with a victory in the ATP Finals over Casper Ruud.
Djokovic is one Grand Slam victory behind Rafael Nadal for the all-time lead and certainly expects a title in Australia. He’ll have plenty of competition, but it’s hard to bet against the talented Serbian.
“It was a relief obviously knowing what I and people closest to me in my life have been through this year with what happened in Australia and post-Australia obviously,” Djokovic said after hearing news that his Visa had been reinstated. “I could not receive better news for sure – during this tournament as well. The Australian Open has been my most successful Grand Slam. I made some of the best memories there.”
Carlos Alcaraz (+550)
If anyone is going to challenge Djokovic in the tennis picks for the Australian Open odds, it’s Alcaraz, the world No. 1 who won his first Grand Slam at the 2022 US Open. Alcaraz has all the potential in the world and could become an all-time great, but he’ll need to prove his victory in New York wasn’t a one-time fluke.
Alcaraz won six tournaments last season and now has a career 90-31 record. Alcaraz won’t turn 20 until May.
Daniil Medvedev (+650)
A former US Open winner, Daniil Medvedev will look to win his second career Grand Slam in Australia. The talented Russian wasn’t permitted to play at Wimbledon last year, where he would have been a favorite. Medvedev won two tournaments last season and finished the year with a 45-19 record.
Women’s Outright Odds
- Iga Swiatek +175
- Caroline Garcia +1200
- Aryna Sabalenka +1200
- Ons Jabeur +1300
- Coco Gauff +1600
- Naomi Osaka +1600
- Jessica Pegula +2000
- Elena Rybakina +2200
- Barbora Krejcikova +2200
- Liudmila Samsonova +2200
Iga Swiatek (+175)
Women’s tennis hasn’t had a dominant force since Serena Williams was at her best in the early 2010s. Swiatek is hoping to change that, and her performance last season suggests she might be on her way to achieving that. She’s certainly the most notable of the Australian Open contenders.
Swiatek won more than 30 matches in a row last season and established herself as the world No. 1. She won her second Grand Slam at the French Open and then won the US Open. She now has three Grand Slam victories and will be looking for her first victory in Australia in 2021.
Caroline Garcia (+1200)
After a career-best season, Caroline Garcia enters the 2023 season with high expectations. The world No. 4 also has a new coach. She dropped Bertrand Perret before the WTA Finals and will continue to work with Juan Pablo Guzman this season. Garcia was 45-20 last season and won four titles.
Other notable names among women in the Australian Open odds include Maria Sakkari (+2500), Bianca Andreescu (+2800), Emma Raducanu (+3300), and Petra Kvitova (+3300).
