The 2023 French Open is nearing a conclusion. With that, we look ahead to the grass-court season with a particular focus on Wimbledon. The third Grand Slam of the tennis schedule. The Stuttgart Open, known as the BOSS Open for sponsorship reasons, is the first grass court tournament of the season.
The BOSS Open schedule, an ATP 250 event, takes place from June 12-18 at Tennisclub Weissenhof in Stuttgart, Germany. One of Europe’s oldest tournaments, it has been won by some of the best players of all time. This year’s BOSS Open betting features a relatively loaded field.
BOSS Open History
The first edition of the BOSS Open was held in 1898. Although, it only became an official ATP event in 1990. Goran Ivanišević won the tournament that year. Subsequent winners have included Guillermo Coria, Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin del Potro, Roger Federer, and Marin Cilic.
The tournament was a clay court event until 2015, which explains why Nadal is a three-time champion in Stuttgart. Matteo Berrettini, a solid grass court player, is the defending champion. The Italian won in 2019 and again in 2022 after defeating Andy Murray 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the final.
Start of the Grass Court Season
Now, rather than being a clay court event, the BOSS Open kicks off the grass court season. The Libema Open in the Netherlands is also being played this week. While subsequent grass court tournaments include the Cinch Championships, Terra Wortmann Open, Mallorca Championships, and Rothesay International.
Wimbledon, the second-to-last grass court event of the year (the Infosys Hall of Fame Open in Rhode Island takes place the following weekend), is held from July 3 to 16 in London.
BOSS Open Favorites
The field – and, of course, the draw – for the BOSS Open has yet to be determined with the French Open still ongoing, but many players have confirmed their participation. Let’s take a look at some of the favorites on whom you should wager when the BOSS Open betting market opens.
Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev was given the wildcard entry into this year’s tournament. The 2020 Olympic champion is into the semifinals at Roland Garros but likely wouldn’t withdraw from Stuttgart, considering he’s the face of the tournament as it’s in his home country.
“I am very pleased to be part of this year’s Boss Open,” Zverev said last month. “The tournaments in Germany have a great significance for me. I love playing in front of my fans. I come to Stuttgart with the goal of getting off to a good start to the grass-court season.”
Zverev hasn’t had much success in Stuttgart, but he did reach the finals in Halle in 2016 and 2017, showing he can play well on grass.
Matteo Berrettini
Berrettini shouldn’t be a favorite considering his form as of late, but it’s hard to bet against the defending champion and two-time winner, especially considering grass is his favorite surface. Berrettini is just 7-6 this season and has fallen to world No. 20 after being a top-10 player for most of last season. He skipped the French Open due to injury but is expected to be ready to compete in Stuttgart.
It’s worth noting that no player has defended their title at Stuttgart since Thomas Muster in 1996, so it might be a good idea to fade Berrettini next week, especially considering his injury concerns.
American Trio
It’s hard to know which one to choose, but if you’re betting on next week’s event, it couldn’t hurt to choose one of the three top American players as your Boss Open picks: Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, and Tommy Paul.
Fritz and Paul are the better grasscourt players. Fritz is also playing the best of the three players right now. He reached the third round at Roland Garros before losing to Francisco Cerundolo in a close four-set match. The 25-year-old is the world No. 8 and owns a 29-11 record with one title this season.
