The 2024 French Open at Roland Garros, the second of four grand slam tennis events this season, concluded on Sunday with an epic men’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev. In the women’s draw, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek cruised to another title at Roland Garros in what was a rather uneventful final against Italian underdog Jasmine Paolini. Let’s take a look back at the Roland Garros finals recap for both the men’s and women’s draws.

Alcaraz Rallies to Win First French Open
Alcaraz, who entered the tournament third in tennis stats for betting favorites, claimed his third grand slam title in the Roland Garros finals recap, rallying from a 2-1 set deficit to beat Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Zverev took over the match in the second and third sets, but it was all Alcaraz in the last two sets as the Spaniard clearly had more left in the tank than Zverev, who was competing in his first grand slam final since the 2020 US Open.
Alcaraz had just three aces in the match and struggled with his first serve, registering a first serve percentage of just 59 percent. However, he had a fantastic return game, limiting Zverev to winning just 33 percent of his points on second serve. In contrast, Alcaraz won 49 percent of the points on his second serve. He was also 9-of-16 in breakpoint opportunities, whereas Zverev was 6-of-23. The match took 4 hours and 19 minutes.
This might be the most impressive grand slam victory for Alcaraz, who also won the US Open last year and Wimbledon in 2022. He beat Jannik Sinner for the second time this season in the semi-finals – Sinner only has three losses all year – and overcame a poor stretch in the final against Zverev. Alcaraz is now the seventh player to win a grand slam on all three surfaces.

Swiatek Continues Dominant Run at Roland Garros
In the other Roland Garros finals recap, Swiatek beat Paolini 6-2, 6-1 in a little more than an hour. Swiatek’s tennis stats for the match included one ace, winning 70 percent of points on second serve, and going 5-of-9 in breakpoint opportunities. Paolini was just 1-for-1 in breakpoint chances, winning the third game of the match to take a 2-1 lead in the first set. However, Swiatek won 10 of the following 11 games to close out the match in dominant fashion.
Swiatek has now won three consecutive titles at Roland Garros and has established herself as the most dominant player – male or female – in the sport. She dropped just one set in the entire tournament, lost only two games combined in her Round of 16 and quarter-final victories, and is on a 19-match winning streak. The five-time grand slam winner will look to win her first Wimbledon title next month.
