The 2022 Mutua Madrid Open is the first WTA 1000 tournament on the clay of 2022, and it is set to feature some of the best tennis players in the world, including the current no.1 on the WTA ladder Iga Swiatek.
The WTA 2022 Mutua Madrid Open will kick off on April 28 and conclude on May 7, one end before the end of the men’s tournament. Moreover, it will mark the 13th edition for women.
Last tournament records
Aryna Sabalenka won the 2021 Mutua Madrid Open pick by defeating Ash Barty in the finals (6-0. 3-6, 6-4). She became only the eighth different woman to win in Miami and will look to add another trophy to her resume.
In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Kiki Bertens winning the 2019 edition when she denied Simona Halep her third title by 6-4, 6-4.

Mutua Madrid Open Betting Analysis
The 2022 Mutua Madrid Open betting odds have yet to be released, but it’s easy to see which players should do well even without the odds.
Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek heads to Madrid as the current no.1 on the WTA ladder and should be one of the main candidates to come out on top. She has recently won the Stuttgart Open, the Sunshine Double, and Qatar Open, which translates to four straight tournament titles.
Many sports betting guides will tell you that Iga Swiatek has yet to win the Mutua Madrid Open, nor has she come close to that. Nevertheless, with the form Iga Swiatek has been showing of late, she should be a threat.
Aryna Sabalenka
Aryna Sabalenka’s record in 2022 might not be as impressive as that of Swiatek, but she is not a player you would want to ignore. Betting guides will show that Sabalenka has yet to win a tournament this season and was particularly disappointing at Miami Open and Indian Wells. But she has found her stride in Stuttgart, where she made the finals.
Moreover, she is the defending champion of the Madrid Open and is known to always deliver on clay courts. With that in mind, Sabalenka might be worth a bet at solid tennis betting odds.
Paula Badosa
The current no.2 in the WTA rankings, Paula Badosa, could be a dark horse to win on her home soil. And she has shown enough for us to believe she can do it.
Badosa kicked off the 2022 season by reaching R4 in Australia and has since produced a few notable placements, including SF at Indian Wells Masters and QF in Miami. She has since added another QF in Charleston Open and a semi-finals appearance in Stuttgart.
Although Badosa always seems to be around but never on top, she is steadily improving and will be there to steal the spotlight if Swiatek slips.
Updates
There isn’t any big news ahead of Madrid Open besides the already-known withdrawal of Barbora Krejčíková, who will not compete due to an elbow injury. Besides her, all remaining players are expected to compete, offering us a fairly complete lineup for the Madrid Open.
Mutua Madrid Open Betting Preview
If we go by the results women tennis players have produced so far this season, it’s very tough to doubt Swiatek. She has won four straight tournaments and is looking like she is in prime form and in an excellent spot to make it five in a row.
However, she has never won in Madrid, nor has she come close to achieving that, which could make you feel concerned about her actual chances to come out on top. On the other side, we have players like Aryna Sabalenka, who haven’t shown as much as Swiatek this year but have a solid past record on the Spanish clay.
So the question is – when betting on tennis, should we value current form over past results or vice versa?
Mutua Madrid Open Betting Prediction
If you’re looking to bet on the current best women’s tennis player, you can’t go wrong with Iga Swiatek. However, while she is undeniably the top player in the world, she will likely be priced at close to even money to win the tournament, which offers very little tennis betting value.
Instead, we like Aryna Sabalenka as a longshot pick. She was phenomenal here in 2021 and has shown enough in 2022 to earn our respect. Admittedly, beating Swiatek won’t come easy, but Sabalenka always delivers on clay and should be in the mix to lift the trophy in Madrid.
