Predictions to Win 2023 Rolex Shanghai Masters

The Asian leg of the ATP Tour season is in full swing, with the Rolex Shanghai Masters predictions into its second week.

The tournament, held this year for the first time since 2019, began last week with a loaded field consisting of the majority of the top players in the world, with the exception of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

There have been many upsets in Shanghai, one of the many ATP 1000 tennis events on the schedule.

Notable Upsets

Five of the top 10 seeds and many others with great tennis odds are already eliminated from the hard courts tournament. Most notably, Alexander Zverev, who reached the semi-finals in the China Open last week, lost his first match in Shanghai.

Zverev, one of 32 players in the 96-player field to get a bye into the second round, looked clearly fatigued, dropping a 3-6, 1-6 decision to Roman Safiullin.

Zverev, the world No. 10 in tennis stats, could likely have vaulted himself into the top eight and potentially earn a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals with a tournament victory in Shanghai.
Daniil Medvedev, who lost to Jannik Sinner in the final of the China Open, also had his tournament cut short, losing to Sebastian Korda 6-7 (8-10), 2-6 in the Round of 32.

Medvedev already has a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals all but wrapped up, so his performance in Shanghai won’t really impact his tennis predictions in Mexico for the year-end tournament.

Holger Rune, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe are the other three top-10 seeds out of the Rolex Shanghai Masters predictions. Brandon Nakashima defeated Rune 6-0, 6-2 in the second round, while Lorenzo Sonego defeated Tiafoe 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.

Top-20 seeds Alex de Minaur, Karen Khachanov, Cameron Norrie, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Lorenzo Musetti are also eliminated.

Top Seeds Still Standing

Just nine of the top-20 seeds, including top seed and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, are still in contention in Shanghai. Alcaraz, however, has only played one match thus far, beating Gregorie Barrere 6-2, 7-5. He’s playing Dan Evans early Monday morning in the third round, with the winner moving on to play Grigor Dimitrov.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fourth seed, is playing Ugo Humbert in the third round on Monday. Fifth seed Andrey Rublev is into the fourth round after defeating French players Quentin Halys and Adrian Mannarino. He’ll play Tommy Paul in the fourth round at 12:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

Sinner has continued to play well after winning the China Open, which moved him up three spots to world No. 3 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

He defeated Sebastian Baez 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the third round and is playing American Ben Shelton in the fourth round Tuesday morning. Ruud, world No. 9, is into the fourth round and could surpass Fritz for the final spot in the ATP Finals with a strong showing in Shanghai.

Rolex Shanghai Masters Predictions

It’s difficult not to take Alcaraz in any tournament in which he’s playing, as the Spaniard is 61-8 this season with six titles. However, it has been a long season for Alcaraz, and he started to show some cracks in his armor against Sinner in the China Open. He was down a break early to Evans at the time of publication.

Because he has so much to play for, Ruud is a decent bet to win the Rolex Shanghai Masters. He has a favorable fourth-round opponent in Fabian Marozsan and would play either Hubert Hurkacz or Zhang Zhizhen in the quarter-finals.

Potential semi-final opponents are Sinner, Shelton, Korda, and Francisco Cerundolo. Outside of Sinner, it’s a very favorable draw for Ruud, who had been struggling prior to the tournament.

When it comes to our final Rolex Shanghai Masters predictions, Casper Ruud is a good final bet.
