With just a few days remaining before one of the biggest tennis main events of the year, Wimbledon, we take a look at the Rothesay International Eastbourne predictions to see who’s in fine form heading into the grass court Grand Slam.
The Rothesday International Eastbourne is one of two ATP warm-up events for Wimbledon, with the other being the Mallorca Championships.
Americans Taylor Fritz, the defending champion, and Tommy Paul headline the Rothesay International Eastbourne predictions draw and received byes into the second round, which is underway on Wednesday.
Third seed Alex de Minaur, who has been struggling this season, withdrew from the event, while Tomas Etcheverry, Lorenzo Sonego, and Botic van de Zandschulp were all eliminated in the first round.
Rothesay International Eastbourne History
The Rothesay International Eastbourne has been played since 1974 and is an ATP 250 and WTA 500 level event. It was strictly a WTA event until 2009 when it replaced the Nottingham Open on the ATP Tour.
Russian Dmitry Tursunov won the inaugural men’s tournament in 2009, while subsequent winners have included Andy Roddick (2012), Novak Djokovic (2017), and Alex de Minaur (2021). Fritz won in 2019 and 2022.
Betting Opportunities
Let’s take a quick look at the Rothesay International Eastbourne odds to find some betting opportunities.
Maxime Cressey (-200) vs. Zhizhen Zhang (+162)
There’s a possibility for all-American semifinals and finals at ATP Eastbourne, but Maxime Cressey would need to defeat Chinese player Zhizhen Zhang and then win his quarter-final match-up, while the winner of Fritz/Mackenzie McDonald would also have to win their quarter-final.
Cressey defeated qualifier Daniel Galan in the opening round, while Zhang scored an upset over Sonego – both players won in straight sets.
Cressey and Zhang are both 26 years old and separated by one spot in the world rankings, with Zhang ranked at a career-best 54 and Cressey at 55. Maxime Cressey, despite being the favorite, is only 8-15 this season and had lost nine consecutive matches before winning his opening-round match. Zhang is 17-18 this season. Both players are 1-2 on grass.
Cressey has the shorter tennis odds here, but he really shouldn’t be the favorite based on his performance. Expect Zhang to ride the wave of momentum from his victory over Sonego and move into the quarter-finals.
Sebastian Baez (+350) vs. Tommy Paul (-500)
Like Zhang and Cressey, Sebastian Baez and Tommy Paul have surprisingly never played each other on the ATP Tour and will meet for the first time in the second round of the Rothesay International Eastbourne.
Paul is the No. 2 seed and earned an automatic entry into the second round, while Baez beat Nuno Borges 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the Rothesay International Eastbourne stats.
Paul, the world No. 17, is 24-14 this season, including 3-2 on grass, his preferred surface. He is 16-11 in his career on grass, while Baez, a better clay court player, is just 3-3 on grass in the last three seasons. Paul should be able to use the added rest to his advantage, while his serve will be difficult for Baez on a somewhat unfamiliar surface. Expect a two-set victory for the American.
Rothesay International Eastbourne Predictions
Fritz is certainly in a good position to win the tournament for the second consecutive year and third time, although he may be challenged by the likes of Francisco Cerundolo and the winner of Cressey/Zhang in his half of the bracket.
The bottom half of the bracket is a little more wide open. A Fritz-Paul final would be great for American tennis, but Nicolas Jarry and Miomir Kecmanovic, among others, stand in the way of that happening.
- Final Prediction: Taylor Fritz def. Nicolas Jarry
