The 2024 Wimbledon Championships came to an end on Sunday’s tennis schedule in familiar fashion as Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic to win his fourth grand slam and successfully defend his title at the All England Club. In the women’s draw, world No. 32 Barbora Krejcikova beat seventh seed Jasmine Paolini to win her second career grand slam. Let’s take a look back at the Wimbledon finals highlights.
Alcaraz Cruises to Easy Title Defense
Alcaraz achieved many feats in the Wimbledon finals highlights, including defending his title, becoming the sixth – and youngest – male player to win grand slams on all three surfaces in a calendar year, and the second player in the Open Era to win each of his first four grand slam finals. He needed five sets to beat Djokovic in 2023 but beat him 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in a rout on Sunday.
Djokovic remains one title shy of tying Roger Federer for the all-time lead with eight Wimbledon singles titles. His runner-up result was somewhat surprising considering his poor start to the season and injury troubles, but he had a favorable draw, avoiding a quarter-final match due to Alex de Minaur’s injury and getting to play 25th-ranked Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals. In contrast, Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev in the quarter- and semi-finals.

Krejcikova Defies the Odds
In other Wimbledon finals highlights, the women’s draw was much more unpredictable as 32nd-ranked Barbora Krejcikova beat Jasmine Paolini, the first Italian woman to make a Wimbledon final. There were plenty of upsets early in the tournament, including world No. 1 Iga Swiatek losing in the third round to Yulia Putintseva. Five other top-10 seeds were out by the third round.
Krejcikova beat Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in a back-and-forth final. Paolini was her own worst enemy in the third set, double faulting to give up break point with the two players tied 3-3. Krejcikova was just 7-9 this season before the start of Wimbledon. Paolini, meanwhile, is now the first woman to be runner-up at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year since Venus Williams in 2002.

Can Djokovic Win Another Slam?
Djokovic hasn’t won a title this season and has come up short in each of the first three Grand Slams, losing in the semi-finals in Australia, pulling out due to injury at the French Open, and losing in the final at Wimbledon. It has been a mixed bag and, while he had some positive results at the All England Club, it seems clear that both Alcaraz and Sinner have surpassed the 24-time grand slam champion.
The U.S Open and 2025 Australian Open might be Djokovic’s last two legitimate shots at winning another grand slam, but it’s worth noting Alcaraz is already a champion in New York and Sinner will be poised to win another major title before the end of the year – he only has four losses all season. Medvedev is also a former US Open winner and has come close this year, reaching the Australian Open final and Wimbledon semi-final.

Is Krejcikova Being Undervalued?
Even despite how well Krejcikova performed at Wimbledon, she was never going to have shorter US Open odds than the likes of grand-slam champions Aryna Sabalenka, Swiatek, or defending champion Coco Gauff. Still, it’s a little surprising to see nine players with better odds to win than her.
It’s not like she didn’t have any past success. Therefore, Krejcikova won the French Open in 2021 and is a former world No. 2. She seems to be over the back injury that kept her out of action earlier this season and is a must-bet longshot pick in tennis betting for the US Open at +2800.
