Green Bay Packers

The Packers actually began to play in 1919, a year before the NFL was formed, but they were an independent football team that played only against local teams in Wisconsin and Michigan’s upper peninsula. Curly Lambeau’s team was impressive enough to draw the attention of the newly formed American Professional Football Association and were invited to join the league in 1921. Lambeau appealed, and the team was reinstated, but they continued to flounder financially, and in 1923 a group of local businessmen formed the Green Bay Football Corporation to financially support and run the team. They continue to do so today. This series of events laid out much of what is unique about the Packers. They are the only community-owned sports franchise in North America, and this type of ownership actually violates current NFL rules. They were grandfathered in, however, when the league laid out its current ownership rules in the 1980s. 1929 NFL Championship

The Packers and Giants were both unbeaten heading into their November 24th game at the Polo Grounds, and the 20-6 win by the Packers set them up as undefeated first-time champions.

1930 NFL Championship

The Packers won back-to-back championships, securing the title by blocking an extra point in the season’s final week, finishing with a tie against Portsmouth.

1931 NFL Championship

1944 NFL Championship

1961 NFL Championship

It took until 1960 for the Packers to return to the NFL Championship Game, and until 1961 before they won it again. This time it was new head coach Vince Lombardi at the helm, beating the Giants 37-0.

1962 NFL Championship

Lombardi made it back-to-back titles for him when he and the Packers once again beat the Giants, 16-7. Linebacker Ray Nitschke was the game’s MVP.

1965 NFL Championship

The final championship before the Super Bowl era came on a 23-12 win over the Browns.

Super Bowl I

The NFL Champion Packers beat the AFL Champion Kansas City City Chiefs, 35-10.

Super Bowl II

The Packers made it two straight by beating the Oakland Raiders, 33-14. Bart Starr won his second straight MVP.

Super Bowl XXXI

The lone Super Bowl win of the Brett Favre era came with a 35-21 win over the Patriots. Desmond Howard was the game’s MVP.

Lambeau was the first coach to win three consecutive championships as the coach of the same team, and that feat has only been matched since the days of Lambeau once, by fellow Packers legend Vince Lombardi. Lombardi only coached the Packers for nine seasons, but in that time, he won five NFL championships and the first two Super Bowls. When he took over in Green Bay the Packers were coming off a one-win season. Within two years, they were playing for the title. At the time of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, Lombardi’s hatred of racism was also legendary. He famously told the businesses in Green Bay that if his black and while players weren’t treated equally, none of them would be allowed to frequent that business.
