Green Bay Packers

The Packers actually began to play in 1919, a year before the NFL was formed, but they were an independent football team that played only against local teams in Wisconsin and Michigan’s upper peninsula. Curly Lambeau’s team was impressive enough to draw the attention of the newly formed American Professional Football Association and were invited to join the league in 1921. It was an auspicious beginning, to say the least. The Acme Packers, as they were known, had their league franchise revoked at the end of the season because they were caught using college players. Lambeau appealed, and the team was reinstated, but they continued to flounder financially, and in 1923 a group of local businessmen formed the Green Bay Football Corporation to financially support and run the team. They continue to do so today. This series of events laid out much of what is unique about the Packers. They are the only community-owned sports franchise in North America, and this type of ownership actually violates current NFL rules. They were grandfathered in, however, when the league laid out its current ownership rules in the 1980s. It’s also worth noting that the 1921 revocation of their NFL franchise was done at the urging of George Halas, which set up the now century’s old rivalry with the Chicago Bears.

Top Players in Green Bay Packers History

The Packers have been led by four different Hall of Fame quarterbacks. In the 1930s, it was Arnie Herber, a four-time NFL champion and three-time NFL passing leader. Then came Bart Starr, a five-time NFL champion, two-time Super Bowl MVP, and the NFL’s MVP in 1966. Brett Favre was the third great Packers quarterback, winning three NFL MVP awards, Super Bowl XXXI, and playing in 11 Pro Bowls. He’s also a member of the NFL’s 100 Anniversary All-Time Team. Most recently, it’s Aaron Rodgers putting together a Hall of Fame career under center. He is also a three-time NFL MVP and was the MVP of Super Bowl XLV. More modern Packers in the Hall of Fame are Reggie White, a Super Bowl champion with the Packers and the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year both in Philadelphia and Green Bay.

Charles Woodson played seven of his seasons with the Packers, and the nine-time Pro Bowlers was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.

Top Coaches in Green Bay Packers History

The patriarch of the Packers was Earl “Curly” Lambeau, and without him, none of the rest that followed would have been possible. Lambeau was a six-time NFL champion as the head coach of the Packers. In 29 seasons as the head of the Packers, he won 229 games and coached eight future Hall of Famers.

Lambeau was the first coach to win three consecutive championships as the coach of the same team, and that feat has only been matched since the days of Lambeau once, by fellow Packers legend Vince Lombardi. Lombardi only coached the Packers for nine seasons, but in that time, he won five NFL championships and the first two Super Bowls. When he took over in Green Bay the Packers were coming off a one-win season. Within two years, they were playing for the title. At the time of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, Lombardi’s hatred of racism was also legendary. He famously told the businesses in Green Bay that if his black and while players weren’t treated equally, none of them would be allowed to frequent that business.
