Injury Update

The Cleveland Browns kick off their 2022 season against the Carolina Panthers and against a very familiar face at quarterback, former Browns’ number one overall draft pick Baker Mayfield.

Browns vs. Panthers Betting Preview

When the NFL schedule was initially released, this game didn’t raise many eyebrows. Both the Browns and Panthers were disappointing in 2021, and if they are going to turn things around this season, Week 1 against a non-conference team isn’t going to tell much of a story.

But then the trade happened. The quarterback who ended the Browns’ postseason futility two seasons ago was sent to Carolina for a conditional draft pick.

The Browns even picked up the majority of Mayfield’s contract. And just like that, the Browns vs Panthers betting analysis became much juicier.

The Browns still fancy themselves a Super Bowl-caliber team, but they decided to move forward without their former quarterback. He now tries to remake himself, and his career, by taking over the innovative offense of Panthers head coach Matt Rhule.

Rivalry History

The Browns and Panthers don’t play each other very often. Since the Cleveland Browns were returned to the NFL in 1999, they’ve played just six times, with Carolina winning four of those.

The most recent meeting was in 2018, when rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield led his Browns to a 26-20 win over Cam Newton and the Panthers. It is worth noting that in this matchup, the home team has won the last four games.

Matchup Trends

Much of the focus on this game will be on the quarterbacks, but a quick look at Browns vs. Panthers stats tells us that the running backs will go a long way toward deciding the winner in this one.

The Browns have the running back tandem of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, the best duo in the NFL. The Panthers have Christian McCaffrey, one of the very best multi-purpose backs in the NFL, when he’s healthy.

Looking at the head-to-head Browns vs Panthers stats, the Browns led the NFL with 5.1 yards per carry in 2021. The Panthers, however, allowed just 4.1 yards per carry, good for eighth best in the NFL. So if a defense can match up well against the Browns’ running game, it’s Carolina’s.

Venue Information

The Carolina Panthers play their home games in Bank of America Stadium, which first opened in Charlotte in 1996. The Panthers have sold out more than 150 consecutive home games and are 112-104 all-time at home. Although in 2021, the Panthers were just 2-6 when playing at home.

Betting Tips for Cleveland Browns vs. Carolina Panthers

It’s the opening game of the 2022 season for both teams, so there are no current NFL stats to help inform our Browns vs Panthers betting analysis. But this game, and where you place your money, goes well beyond the stats.

Mayfield has all of the incentive in the world to come out and play his best game since the 2020 season. And to be fair to Mayfield, he spent much of 2021 injured.

He’s a better quarterback than what we saw for most of last season. Going back to 2020, when Mayfield was leading the Browns in the postseason, he had turned the team into a trendy Super Bowl pick.

The Browns, of course, know Mayfield well, and they should know how to defend him. They also feature Myles Garrett, who begins the 2022 season as the betting favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year.

Add in Jadeveon Clowney, Denzel Ward, and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and the Browns have a big edge on the defensive side of the ball, which accounts for them being favored by 1-point.
