Current Squad / Roster

The Ecuador National Football team is one of the top South American national teams to make it to the 2022 FIFA World Cup after finishing fourth on the log. The team got 26 points after playing 18 games, enough to help them seal one of the top four spots in the CONMEBOL qualification campaign.

After making it to the World Cup, the team engaged in a few friendlies and went on to win two and draw one, giving them a 100% record in that period. In addition, the team didn’t concede a single goal. It is an excellent way for the team to get ready for Qatar. Before then, let’s take an in-depth look at the team and the Ecuador stats.

FIFA World Cup Ecuador Records

Historical Events

For the first three FIFA World Cup competitions, the country declined participation on each occasion. In 1950, the team withdrew, and then they refused involvement in 1954 and 1958. After that, they didn’t qualify from 1962-98.

In 2002, the team made its first appearance in the competition. In 2006, the team made another appearance, but unfortunately, they couldn’t make it to the 2010 World Cup. They made the 2014 World Cup but missed the 2018 World Cup.

The team’s first appearance in the FIFA World Cup was in 2002, when they only won one game and lost the other two. In 2006, the team went a step further, making it to the Round of 16 after winning two games in the group stage.

So far, the Germany 2006 World Cup is Ecuador’s best record in the competition. In 2014, the team got four points in the group stage but couldn’t qualify for the knockout rounds. As a result, getting into the Round of 16 is the team’s best performance in the tournament.

This team has seen some interesting characters over the years. One of the most notable names is Ivan Hurtado, the most capped Ecuadorian. He played for the national team between 1992 and 2014. Another noteworthy player who represented Ecuador and played many games for the team is Agustin Delgado, whose record for most goals was broken by Enner Valencia.

Another notable name that many casual fans remember, especially Manchester United fans, is Antonio Valencia. He won multiple Premier League titles and other trophies for Manchester United and had 99 caps for the national team, scoring 11 goals in total. Ecuador’s memorable World Cup moment was when Delgado scored the country’s first World Cup goal in 2002.

Ecuador’s Fun Facts in Previous World Cups

After the unfortunate death of Christian Benitez, jersey number 11 was retired in his honor. However, in Brazil’s 2014 FIFA World Cup, the number had to be reinstated because of FIFA regulations.

Antonio Valencia still holds the record for the youngest player to represent Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup competition. He was still 20 when he made his Ecuador World Cup appearance. And as it stands, we’ve not seen any player that would break the record.

Ecuador is one of the teams that doesn’t have individual talents to rely on, but they have collective strength as they follow Gustavo Alfaro’s tactics. The team won’t have too many notable individuals to look towards. However, a few top players, like Micheal Estrada, Moises Caicedo, etc., would be some of the first names on the team sheet.
