The club was formed in 1889 and competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. Sheffield United have won the First Division championship once, in 1925, and the FA Cup twice, in 1902 and 1915. The club have also won the League Cup once, in 1992, and the Community Shield twice, in 1925 and 1992.

The club have played in the top flight of English football for most of their history, with the exception of a period of time in the 1970s and 1980s when they played in the Second Division.
