Auxerre is one of the oldest teams in France. They’ve been around for more than 110 years and were one of the pioneers of football in France. The team has had many moments since its creation and will continue pushing the growing league’s boundaries.

It is one team that has been part of the most significant moments in the league and would continue to try to impact the seasons. We expect the team to maintain its current status. Undoubtedly, it would be difficult for the team to win titles in France today because of the top teams, but they have the history and can become a major force again.

Auxerre General Info

Auxerre is one of the teams based in the commune of Auxerre in Burgundy. The team has been around for many years, and its full name is Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise. It is shortened to AJ Auxerre or simply AJA. It has an incredible history and participates in the French Ligue 1.

The team plays its football at the Stade de I’Abbe-Deschamps. It is a stadium with about 17,924 seating capacity and would remain its home for the foreseeable future. The club’s owner is James Zhou, with Baptiste Malherbe as the president, and Christophe Pelissier is the team’s manager for this season.

The team will compete for the 2022-23 Ligue 1 championship after qualifying through the playoffs from the Ligue 2 division. Their primary colors are white and blue, making up for their home jersey. Meanwhile, the away jersey will take the away colors, black and blue.

Auxerre History

Auxerre stats began as far back as 1905. Ernest Abbe Deschamps created them, and by 1908, they reached their first championship final. Although they lost, it was an impressive feat. But they soon suffered some blows and struggled back into competitive football.

Because the club struggled so much during its early years, it wasn’t until 1980 that it made it into the first division. The team’s first season was impressive, and they were incredible performers as they held their own against some of the big names in the competition. They even beat PSG and Nantes.

In the 1983-84 season, they made it into the top three and continued to push for an incredible run. Although they had won the Ligue 2 in the 1979-80 season, the team winning the Ligue 1 in the 1995-96 season was one of the greatest moments in the team’s history.

They continued to enjoy more successes but soon fell down the pecking order as they participated in the lower division. It wasn’t until the 2022-23 season before they made it into the Ligue 1 division.

Auxerre Records

Auxerre stats show they have built some impressive records over the years. The team now has many accolades from its early years and the 90s. Even though they’ve bounced between the top division and lower leagues, they’ve had some impact in Europe. Their records are undeniable because they maintain a solid performance.

One of the team’s incredible records came in their European Cup run during the 1992-93 season. They beat Ajax 4-2 in the first leg, enough for the team to make it into the semifinals. They couldn’t get past the semifinals, but it was an incredible record for the team in their entire history.

The team also participated in the 2022-23 transfers as they look to strengthen their squad and improve on what they have before kickstarting a season in the Ligue 1. It takes a lot of work to make it into the top-tier league, and it takes more work for teams to remain in the country’s top division.

So, below are some of the top new arrivals and departures for Auxerre in the last summer transfer window.

  • Top Arrivals: M’Baye Niang, Gideon Mensah, Rayan Raveloson, Nuno Da Costa, Youssouf M’Changama
  • Top Departures: Carlens Arcus Aly Ndom, Gautier Lloris, Alex Georgen, Sonny Laiton
