Rennes History

Stade Rennais Football Club’s story started in 1901 on the 10th of March when a group of former students in Brittany partnered to create a football team. During that time, football has become one of the fastest-growing sports in that area. As a result, people from the city were fascinated by the sport, and a club was created.

The team’s first match was against FC Rennais in 1902, but they lost 6-0. After that, they became one of the founding members of the Ligue de Bretagne de football, a regional league created by the federation. And by 1904, they combined with FC Rennais to form the Stade Rennais Universite Club.

From there, the team started to build local recognition, and in the 30s, they won their first major championship. When the 60s came around, the team made its way to its first European competition. And as a result, they started playing at the top level. Rennes remains a top side in the French football divisions.
