Germany has many teams with incredible histories. One of the oldest of the bunch is Schalke 04, which has been around for more than 110 years. The team has a long history starting from when they went by Westfalia Schalke. The team’s history continues for many years, and we can see how incredible they’ve been for many years.

Schalke 04 has won some trophies in the domestic league and also played in multiple European competitions. Although they’ve had some seasons when they struggled, the team will remain a big part of Germany’s football history because of some of the things they’ve contributed to the competition.

Schalke 04 General Info

Schalke 04 started as Westfalia Schalke before they became Fußballclub Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04. Aside from that, the team is also called Die Konigsblauen, which means The Royal Blues, and Die Knappen, which translates to The Miners. The team’s name is also shortened to S04.

The club has had many years as a pro club, and they currently play all their home games at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. It is a stadium with about 62,271 seating capacity. The executive board chairman is Axel Hefer, and Thomas Reis will remain the team’s head coach this season.

We expect them to play in their primary blue and white colors as it has been a massive part of the nation’s history. We expect them to keep their logo, which writes S04 in white text and has blue highlights. The team is set to compete in the Bundesliga for the 2022-23 season after winning the 2. Bundesliga in the 2021-22 season.

Schalke 04 History

One thing Schalke 04 has in abundance is history. Since 1904, the club has been around, starting its story as Westfalia Schalke. Some high school students formed it. Initially, the club’s colors were red and yellow. At the start, they couldn’t make it into the official league, and it wasn’t until 1915 before they could make an appearance.

From making it into the official league in Germany, their success story began, and between 1928 and 1933, the team had its rise to dominance. They were a popular side that featured in many competitions. In 1933, they started their championship years, and throughout their time in the Gauliga Westfalen, the team was formidable.

By 1934, they had won their first national trophy. After the war, the team continued its rise. When the Bundesliga was created in 1963, Schalke 04 was part of the first teams that participated. However, it wasn’t easy for the team, and they weren’t as dominant as they were in the defunct leagues.

Although they became a top team and regular in the Bundesliga, they struggled at some point, and it wasn’t easy for the team to cope with other formidable teams.

Schalke 04 has some interesting records, especially during their time in the Gauliga Westfalen. Like many European teams, Schalke 04 also made some transfers in the 2022-23 season. They added some new players to the roster, allowing them to remain competitive. Also, the team won’t have to worry about the lost players. So, below are some of the players who joined and left.
