Some teams across Europe have had incredible seasons in their domestic leagues, but they fail to make massive impacts on the European stage. Sporting Lisbon is one of these teams. They’ve had plenty of success in the Liga Portugal over the years, but they are yet to dominate European Competitions, including the UEFA Champions League.
They’ve won multiple domestic trophies since they started playing competitively; Sporting Lisbon stats are one of the best in the Portuguese League. They were one of the first champions, but their only record in Europe was their Cup Winners Cup victory in the 1963/1964 season.
Sporting Lisbon General Info
Sporting Lisbon is the number three team in the Portuguese top division. They are the third most decorated team in the league. Their only problem is they don’t have enough clout in Europe like the other top two teams. They are 27th in the UEFA Champions League standings for various clubs.
The team would have to do better to increase their tally across Europe. If you want to engage in Sporting Lisbon betting, you’d have to check their games to see if they are not playing against the top teams.
Sporting Lisbon History
Sporting Lisbon started its history in 1902 when Francisco da Ponte, Jose Maria, and Horta Gavazzo went on to create Sport Club de Belas. However, the club was disbanded after playing one match. But it was eventually revived two years later. From then, the club began its journey. They played their first Liga match in 1935 and won 6-0 against Academia de Coimbra.
But unfortunately, the team got its heaviest defeat in history when they faced Porto in 1936. Over the years, we’ve seen Sporting Lisbon enjoy a rollercoaster ride in the Primeira Liga, winning enough games to crown them champions on many occasions.
Sporting Lisbon Records
Sporting Lisbon first won a competitive title in the 1940/41 season. Since that first victory, they’ve won 18 more league titles. They won the Portuguese Cup to mark their first double that same season.
They’ve also won the Portuguese Cup up to 17 times since they arrived in the national league. We’ve seen them participate in multiple Champions League schedules, but they’re yet to win a single title.
