Team History

Known as Atleti in Spain, Club Atlético de Madrid (Atletico Madrid) is one of the most accomplished La Liga clubs. Its 11 La Liga titles rank third behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Founded in 1903, the club now plays its home games at the 68,456-seat Metropolitano Stadium. The club was originally owned by Athletic Bilbao, but became independent of its rival in 1921 and lost to the club in the Copa del Rey final.

Atletico Madrid has had several successful seasons but experienced one of its best periods from 1947 to 1966, during which time it won three La Liga titles and was regularly among the top five teams in the table. Atletico Madrid has had six seasons outside of the La Liga, the most recent of which was in 2001-02, but has been a fixture in the top division since then.

Atletico Madrid is now enjoying even greater success. The club has finished top three in La Liga standings for a remarkable 10 consecutive seasons dating back to 2012-13. It won La Liga in 2020-21 and 2013-14.
