Rayo Vallecano History
Founded in 1924, Rayo Vallecano is a team that has spent much of its history in the Segunda División. It has a much smaller following than the other two Madrid clubs (Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid) and is among the last local neighborhood clubs in the country – it is based in the Madrid neighborhood of Vallecas.
Despite announcing plans for a new stadium more than a decade ago, Rayo Vallecano (Los Franjirrojos) still plays in the 14,708-seat Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas. It is one of the smallest stadiums in La Liga and doesn’t have a grandstand on one of the goal ends.
The club spent 11 seasons in the Tercera División and 35 in the Segunda División. It didn’t reach La Liga standings until the 1977-78 season and hasn’t spent more than five consecutive seasons in the league. Rayo Vallecano finished 12th in the La Liga standings last season.
Rayo Vallecano – Historical Events
Rayo Vallecano achieved arguably its greatest achievement in 1976-77 when it finished third in the Segunda División and earned qualification into La Liga for the first time.

Who are the Rayo Vallecano Best Coaches?
It’s hard to argue against current Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola Sagarna as being the team’s best-ever coach. Since taking over in August 2020, he has helped the club get back to La Liga and advance to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. He also led Rayo Vallecano to a 12th-place finish in La Liga in 2021-22. That was the club’s best finish in La Liga odds since it finished 11th in 2014-15.
Rayo Vallecano has had plenty of manager turnover throughout its history. Pepe Mel, who managed the team from 2006 to 2010, is one of its longest-tenured managers.
