Goals AgainstReal Sociedad History
One of the founding members of La Liga, Real Sociedad began play in 1909 and enjoyed moderate success throughout the 20th century until the 1980s, when it became a powerhouse in Spanish football.
For much of its history, Real Sociedad signed and played only Basque players, similar to its rival Athletic Bilbao, but that changed in 1989 when the club signed the Republic of Ireland forward John Aldridge. It now boasts a diverse roster of Basque and foreign players, with representation from countries like Japan, Mexico, France, and Sweden. Real Sociedad has also developed world-renown youth players through its youth squad, including Xabi Alonso and Antoine Griezmann.
Known locally as Los Txuri-Urdin (The White and Blues), the team plays out of the 39,500-seat Anoeta Stadium and has been part of La Liga every year since 2010-11. It has finished top six in each of the last three years.
Real Sociedad – Historical Events
The first major historical event in Real Sociedad history came in 1931 when it changed its name to Donostia Club de Futbol. It reverted back to Real Sociedad, which translates to “Royal Society of Football,” in 1939 following the Spanish Civil War.
The 1989 signing of Aldrige was another major event in the club’s history. Aldridge led Real Sociedad players in scoring with 16 goals that year and finished fourth in La Liga. The club signed its first Black player, Dalian Atkinson, the following year.
