Team History
Unión Deportiva Almería, founded in 1989, is the youngest club in La Liga. Whereas many La Liga clubs have been around for more than 100 years, Almeria has only existed for 33 years and, prior to this season, has only played six seasons in La Liga.
Known as Almería Club de Fútbol when it was created, Almeria began play in the Categorías Regionales before moving up to the Tercera División in 1992-93. It advanced to the Segunda División B after just one season but bounced back and forth between both divisions until finally reaching the Segunda División in 2002-03.
Almeria made La Liga for the first time in 2007-08 after finishing second in the Segunda División. It spent four seasons in the top division before a last-place finish in 2010-11 put the club back in the Segunda División. It is back in La Liga for the first time since 2014-15 after winning the Segunda División title in 2021-22.
Almeria stats plays its home games out of the 15,274-seat Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos. The club is owned by Turki Al-Sheikh, who also serves as its president.
UD Almería – Historical Events
Since the creation of the club in 1989, Almeria has had several notable moments, including its successive promotions to eventually reach La Liga for the first time in 2007-08. The team won its first-ever La Liga match 3-0 against Deportivo de La Coruña.
Perhaps its best-ever season was in 2010-11 when, despite finishing 20th in La Liga standings, it reached the semifinals of the Copa del Rey. This was its best-ever finish in the tournament. More recently, it advanced to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey in 2020-21.
